Bahrain National Day 2026: date, holiday and planning guide
By Gaurav Agarwal · Updated 21 October 2026
Bahrain National Day is 16 December. In 2026, 16 December is Wednesday and 17 December is Thursday. The permanent National Portal holiday list shows 16 and 17 December, but the annual 2026 government closure circular is to be announced and had not appeared on the Prime Minister’s Office site when checked on 21 October 2026. Friday and Saturday are the regular weekly holidays.

01Know the fixed date and the holiday window
Bahrain National Day falls on 16 December every year. In 2026, 16 December is Wednesday and 17 December is Thursday. The National Portal lists 16 and 17 December under National Day holidays.
That permanent list is not the annual closure circular. The latest Prime Minister’s Office circular available when this guide was checked was issued on 9 December 2025 and closed ministries, government departments and public institutions on 16 and 17 December 2025. The equivalent 2026 closure circular is to be announced, so check the Prime Minister’s Office news list and your institution before treating a branch or counter as closed.
Friday and Saturday are Bahrain’s regular weekly holidays. If the 2026 two-day government closure is confirmed for Wednesday and Thursday, government offices would remain closed through the regular Friday and Saturday weekend. Confirm the eventual 2026 circular because the permanent list alone does not establish every institution’s schedule.
The public-holidays decree lists National Day on 16 December and provides an additional day when a listed holiday falls on Friday or another official holiday. In 2026 the named date is Wednesday, so do not add a compensation day yourself.
| Item | Official information | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| National Day | Wednesday, 16 December 2026 | Treat this as the fixed annual date |
| Second listed holiday | Thursday, 17 December 2026 | Wait for the annual closure circular |
| 2026 closure status | To be announced as checked on 21 October 2026 | Check the Prime Minister’s Office and your institution |
| Regular weekend | Friday and Saturday | Plan government visits before Wednesday if closure is confirmed |
| Independence Day | 15 August 1971 | Do not confuse it with the National Day date |
02What Bahrain National Day commemorates
A Prime Minister’s Office Cabinet statement published in December 2022 says Bahrain’s National Day celebrations commemorate the establishment of the modern Bahraini State by Ahmed Al Fateh in 1783 and the anniversary of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s accession to the throne.
The annual two-day public-holiday circular describes 16 and 17 December as marking National Day and the accession anniversary. The circular does not split those two occasions into separate operating rules, so use the published closure dates rather than guessing which service closes for which occasion.
Independence Day is a separate historical date. Bahrain’s National Portal lists it as 15 August 1971, while National Day is 16 December. This is why an expat may see August in a history reference but December in workplace, school and government holiday notices.
03Use the official calendar for National Day events
Event schedules change each year. Bahrain Tourism's official site provides a calendar covering cultural festivals, live performances, sporting events and other activities. Use that calendar as the starting point for 2026 dates, locations, admission and timing.
Older official listings are useful only as examples of the detail an event page may provide. A 2025 National Day listing for 1890 Boulevard named the Seef District location, free entry, 11 and 12 December and a 6 pm start. Those details belong to that 2025 listing and must not be reused as a 2026 schedule.
A separate official Winter Market listing ran from 19 November 2025 to 10 January 2026 at Al Aali Mall. It published different weekday and weekend hours. The lesson is practical: open the event page itself and check the year, date, start time, end time, location and entry label before leaving home.
Save the event page on your phone and check it again on the day. If several family members are meeting, share the exact listing rather than a screenshot with no live updates. When an event page names a mall, waterfront or district, open the location link and choose a meeting point before the crowds arrive.
- Open the official Bahrain Tourism calendar.
- Search for National Day, Celebrate Bahrain or December events.
- Open the individual listing and confirm that it shows 2026.
- Check the location, date, start time, end time and entry information.
- Check the same listing again on the day before travelling.
- Keep a backup plan if the event is outdoors or entry is limited.
04Plan government, banking and service visits before the holiday
The National Portal lists 16 and 17 December as National Day holidays, while the annual government closure circular for 2026 was still to be announced when checked on 21 October 2026. Confirm the Prime Minister’s Office circular and the organisation’s own notice before an important visit.
Finish time-sensitive government submissions before the holiday where possible. Save receipts, application numbers and appointment confirmations on your phone. If a deadline is close, do not assume an online service, call centre or physical counter follows the same schedule as another government body.
For banking, confirm the bank's own holiday and transfer notice. For healthcare, check the named hospital or health-centre channel. For schools and nurseries, rely on the institution's message. For private employment, follow the notice issued by your employer and the rules that apply to your contract.
If you are travelling, keep airport and airline timing separate from the public-holiday dates. A holiday can change road traffic and service demand even when your flight time stays the same. Leave extra time, keep your booking reference available and use the operator's live channel for any change.
| Task | Check before 16 December | Save on your phone |
|---|---|---|
| Government errand | Branch or service notice | Application number |
| Banking | Bank holiday and transfer notice | Receipt or transfer reference |
| Healthcare | Named facility hours | Appointment confirmation |
| Event | Official event page and year | Live listing and location |
| Travel | Operator time and route | Ticket and booking reference |
05Follow Bahrain's flag rules during the celebrations
Bahrain's flag law allows individuals and private institutions to display the flag for decoration on official holidays and on public or private occasions. National Day therefore has a clear legal route for respectful private display.
Government buildings and public institutions raise the flag from sunrise to sunset on official holidays and public occasions. That rule is written for those official sites. It should not be expanded into a claim about the operating hours of private events.
The same law prohibits commercial use of the national flag, including specified use in advertising and trademarks. A business planning branded material should check the law and obtain official guidance rather than treating holiday decoration as permission for commercial branding.
Use an accurate Bahrain flag with deep red and white fields separated into five serrations. Choose a clean, undamaged flag.
06Build a simple National Day plan on your phone
Start with one official event rather than trying to cross the island between several venues. Check the live calendar listing, choose a meeting point and save the location. If the event is free, still check whether registration, capacity or a timed entry is shown on the page.
For families, carry water, a charged phone and a small power bank. Photograph the parking level or bus stop, and agree on a reunion point in case the group separates. These are planning tips, not official event rules, so the individual listing remains the authority for bags, entry and venue restrictions.
For visitors, remember that National Day and Independence Day are separate entries on the official portal. Use 16 December when searching the event calendar, and include the year so that an older celebration page does not look current.
After the event, check the route home before leaving the venue. If a road is busy, wait in a safe public place and follow official traffic or venue directions. Avoid forwarding unverified changes from group chats when the organiser's live page gives a different instruction.
07What the permanent official pages do not fix
The fixed National Day date is 16 December, and the permanent holiday list shows 16 and 17 December. The 2026 government closure circular was still to be announced when checked on 21 October 2026. Event schedules, fireworks, concerts, markets, road arrangements and venue times remain changing details, so use the official Bahrain Tourism calendar.
This guide does not turn a previous year's event page into a 2026 promise. The 2025 examples show how the official tourism site labels location, entry, dates and times. For the current schedule, use the calendar and open the individual event page.
