Musk vs Ambani: the Starlink India fight, in order

By Gaurav Agarwal · Updated 21 October 2026

No evidence currently shows that Mukesh Ambani or Reliance blocked Starlink's India launch. TechCrunch reported that Musk made the allegation without evidence, while India's communications ministry said the process was fair and that all three licensed satellite operators were undergoing security assessments before spectrum assignment.

01The five-line version

Starlink and Jio took opposing positions on how India should assign satellite spectrum: Starlink supported administrative allocation, while Jio supported an auction. Gulf News reports that the government backed administrative allocation in 2024; the official PIB record shows that DoT referred the question to TRAI on 11 July 2024 and TRAI issued recommendations on 9 May 2025. A final government decision was not confirmed in the official material checked for this guide.

Gulf News reported that Jio and Airtel announced Starlink distribution agreements in March 2025.

Gulf News dates Starlink’s telecom licence to 6 June 2025 and its IN-SPACe approval to 9 July 2025; Moneylife dates the IN-SPACe approval to 8 July 2025. Both reports said further steps remained.

TechCrunch reported that Musk alleged unnamed oligarchs were blocking the launch and supplied no evidence for the claim.

TechCrunch and Business Today reported that the ministry rejected the allegation and said licensed satellite operators faced the same process and security requirements.

02What each side wanted

The original policy disagreement concerned the method for assigning spectrum. TechCrunch reported that Starlink supported administrative allocation and Reliance Jio supported an auction. Gulf News reported that the government backed administrative allocation in 2024, while the official PIB record shows a TRAI recommendation dated 9 May 2025 after a DoT reference dated 11 July 2024.

Gulf News reported that Jio and Airtel announced agreements to distribute Starlink services in March 2025. TechCrunch also reported that the same companies are developing their own satellite services: Jio with SES, and Airtel through its backing of Eutelsat OneWeb.

Gulf News reported that Reliance said it welcomed competition, including Starlink, and described a common process for applicants. The checked sources do not establish that Reliance controlled Starlink’s security assessment or spectrum assignment.

05Why the spectrum argument mattered

Satellite operators and terrestrial telecom companies disagreed over whether India should assign satellite spectrum administratively or through an auction. TechCrunch reported Starlink’s support for administrative allocation and Jio’s support for an auction.

Gulf News reported that the government backed administrative allocation in 2024. The official PIB release confirms that DoT referred the matter to TRAI on 11 July 2024 and that TRAI released recommendations on 9 May 2025. The release does not confirm a final Cabinet or DoT decision.

Moneylife later reported that the Digital Communications Commission approved a framework on 3 September 2026, while pricing and allocation still had to go to Cabinet. It also reported that home-ministry security clearance remained pending. These details are attributed because no matching official document was captured in this review.

Separate commercial relationships continued alongside the policy dispute. Gulf News reported Starlink distribution agreements with Jio and Airtel, while TechCrunch reported that Jio with SES and Airtel through Eutelsat OneWeb are developing their own satellite services.

06What would be needed to prove interference

A claim that a company blocked a rival would need evidence of an act that changed or delayed the official process. Examples could include a regulator’s order, a court filing, correspondence showing improper pressure, or a documented departure from rules applied to other licensees. None appears in the captured sources reviewed for this guide.

TechCrunch reported Musk’s allegation and also stated that he did not identify the alleged blockers or provide evidence. Gulf News reported Reliance’s reply. Each statement establishes what its speaker said, not that every claim inside it is true.

TechCrunch and Business Today both reported the ministry’s response. TechCrunch reported the “fair and non-discriminatory” wording and the common regulatory stage; Business Today separately reported that the ministry called suggestions of unfair treatment “baseless and misconceived”.

The SEBI filing answers a different question. It verifies the Jio Platforms offer timetable and selected company information, but it does not explain Starlink’s launch timing.

07Where Starlink India stands now

Gulf News and Moneylife report that Starlink cleared licensing and space-authorisation stages, although they differ by one day on the IN-SPACe approval date.

TechCrunch reported that security assessment had to be completed before spectrum could be sought. Moneylife reported that home-ministry clearance remained pending and that DoT pricing and allocation still had to go to Cabinet.

No checked source announced a commercial launch date. A retailer, social account or viral video giving a firm date or price should therefore be treated cautiously unless it links to Starlink or an Indian regulator.

08What this means for readers

There is no verified Starlink India order date or public tariff in the checked sources. Al Jazeera reported Musk’s affordability statement, but it remains a promise rather than a price list.

For homes or businesses waiting for satellite broadband, the practical milestones are security clearance, final spectrum steps and a formal commercial announcement.

For readers following Jio Platforms, the SEBI-hosted abridged prospectus says the offer opens on 21 October and closes on 23 October 2026 and describes a fresh issue of up to 270,000,000 equity shares. It also says Reliance Jio Infocomm served 533.3 million customers as of 30 June 2026. These facts do not establish a connection between the public offer and Starlink’s regulatory timetable.
