Xtrusio AEO/GEO Audit

Sixty answers. Fifty-three name Sulzer.

On the shortlist almost every time. First on fewer than one in three.

Twenty buyer-intent questions were put to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini — 60 answers in total. Sulzer Services was named in 53 of them (88%). Claude named Sulzer 19 times, ChatGPT 17, Gemini 17. Yet it ranked first on only 18 answers (30%): when a question narrows to one category, the top slot goes to a specialist — Hydro on pumps, EthosEnergy on new turbine parts, Koch-Glitsch on mass transfer.

The findings below come from Xtrusio, an AI visibility audit system built for B2B buyer-intent testing. Every mention was recorded by running 20 real prospect questions across three generative AI platforms and reading the answer text — noting whether Sulzer appeared and in what order.

Questions were written from the perspective of reliability, maintenance and turnaround leaders at refineries, gas plants and petrochemical operators evaluating rotating-equipment service partners — not from Sulzer’s own category vocabulary.

High Visibility, Low First-Place Conversion

Visibility is not the problem. Converting to first place is.

Sulzer sits on nearly every AI shortlist (88% of answers), with a modal rank of 2 — but it wins the top slot on only 30%, and almost every miss goes to a single-category specialist. Hydro leads pump questions, EthosEnergy leads new-turbine-part questions, Koch-Glitsch leads mass-transfer questions, Xylem leads water. Sulzer ranks first mainly when a question rewards breadth (“one partner for everything”) or lands inside its own Chemtech line. On a #1-share basis within the tracked set, Sulzer (30%) is two percentage points ahead of Hydro (28%).

Claude carries Sulzer’s visibility at 95%
Claude named Sulzer on 19 of 20 questions and ranked it first seven times — more first-place finishes than any other platform. On the breadth questions (Q3 one partner, Q5 global network) Sulzer was ranked first unanimously across all three platforms.
Gemini gives the fewest first-place finishes
Gemini names Sulzer as often as ChatGPT (85%) but ranks it first only five times and carries the weakest average rank (2.24). It is also where narrower specialists — MD&A, NEC, RMS — surface as first picks that the other two platforms do not return.

Sulzer and Hydro run neck-and-neck
Between them, Sulzer (18) and Hydro (17) take 58% of all first-place answers. Sulzer’s edge comes from breadth questions and its Chemtech line; Hydro’s comes from owning pump-specific questions outright. No third provider reaches double digits.
The rest fragment by category
EthosEnergy (7) takes turbine-part questions, Koch-Glitsch (5) takes mass transfer, Xylem (5) takes water, Bently Nevada (3) takes monitoring. Each owns one lane. Sulzer competes in all of them but leads few — the pattern the next section examines.

AI Positioning Audit

Twenty buyer questions — tap any row to read the exact wording and the rank Sulzer received

Every question was written from the point of view of a real decision-maker researching rotating-equipment service partners before they have chosen a brand. None of them names Sulzer, a competitor, or any category term a vendor invented. They are the questions a buyer actually types.

The Specialist Squeeze

Where the top slot slips from Sulzer to a single-category specialist

In this audit, the split is not between platforms — Sulzer is named on 85–95% of answers on every one. It is between the questions that reward breadth, where Sulzer ranks first, and the questions that narrow to one category, where a specialist takes the top slot and Sulzer settles for second.

“Who is the largest independent pump rebuilder that can engineer reliability upgrades for any brand of pump?”

— Q17. Hydro was ranked first on all three platforms. Sulzer appeared only on Claude (2nd) and was not named on ChatGPT or Gemini.

“We want to upgrade an ageing pump’s hydraulics to cut energy consumption rather than just repair it like-for-like. Who does engineered pump upgrades?”

— Q8. Hydro was ranked first on all three platforms. Sulzer was named second each time — present, but not the pick.

“Which independent service providers can manufacture new gas turbine rotors and parts to OEM specification?”

— Q18. EthosEnergy was ranked first on all three platforms; Sulzer was not named. Manufacturing complete new gas-turbine rotors to OEM specification is a narrower niche than Sulzer’s core repair, rotor-repair and parts work — on this framing the platforms default to dedicated parts manufacturers. See Sulzer’s gas turbine services.
Every miss goes to a specialist
Pump questions (Q1, Q8, Q16, Q17) go to Hydro; new-turbine-part questions (Q2, Q18) to EthosEnergy; mass-transfer (Q13) to Koch-Glitsch; monitoring (Q12) to Bently Nevada; water (Q15, Q20) to Xylem. On most of these Sulzer is named second — on the list, just not first.
Breadth wins; single categories don’t
Sulzer ranks first when a question rewards range — “one partner for pumps, turbines, compressors and motors” (Q3), “global footprint” (Q5) — or when it falls inside the Chemtech line (Q4, Q19). On single-category questions, the platforms default to the category’s best-known single-focus name.
What this audit does and does not tell you

This audit records whether Sulzer is named in the answer a buyer reads, and where it ranks. It does not capture source links, so it cannot say why a platform put one vendor first and another second. Several explanations are consistent with these results — how tightly each platform associates a narrow category with its most recognisable single-focus name, how much third-party material frames Sulzer as the category leader rather than the broad generalist — and this audit does not distinguish between them. What it establishes is the outcome: on the single-category questions tested, a buyer sees Sulzer on the list but a specialist at the top. This is a point-in-time snapshot; a single run can shift a rank by a place or two, and the runner-up pattern here held across the questions tested.

Broad cross-platform visibility across most service lines
Total Tower Care; motor, generator & compressor; monitoring; water & testing; and the breadth questions all return Sulzer on every platform (a couple of single cells aside). The portfolio is broadly recognised — the assistants know Sulzer across the board.
Pumps and new turbine parts thin out
Pump coverage dips to 75% on ChatGPT and Gemini, where Hydro owns the answer, and the turbine line sits at 67% because new-rotor manufacture (Q18) is outside Sulzer’s scope. Testing drops to 50% on ChatGPT alone (Q16).
Section 7

Methodology

How this Xtrusio AEO/GEO Audit was run

01
Twenty buyer-intent questions
Twenty questions built from Sulzer’s service lines and the lanes competitors hold: eight where Sulzer should win (breadth, independence, global network), seven on shared territory (turbine outages, compressor rerates, field service), five where specialists are stronger (pure-play pumps, new turbine parts, monitoring). None names a vendor.
02
Three platforms, sixty answers
Each question was asked once on ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini in September 2026 — 60 answers. A mention means Sulzer is named in the answer text; rank is its order of appearance. Sub-brands (Sulzer Chemtech, Sulzer Sense) count as Sulzer.
03
Competitor scope
The tracked set surfaced Hydro (pumps), EthosEnergy and MD&A (turbine parts), Koch-Glitsch and KSPS (mass transfer), Xylem (water and digital) and Bently Nevada (monitoring). IPS appeared on ChatGPT and Gemini but not Claude. Each vendor was counted once per answer, the same rule applied to Sulzer.

Sulzer’s total is exhaustive across the full 20 × 3 matrix. Competitor totals are minimum confirmed counts within the tracked set and should not be read as a complete market ranking. Model versions, browsing state and account settings were not separately recorded. Source URLs were not captured, so this audit measures whether a vendor is named and where it ranks, not where the platform read about it. A single run of any question can shift a rank by a place or two on repeat; the runner-up pattern here held across the questions tested.

Section 8

Recommendations

What to change first, and how to tell whether it worked

Sulzer already publishes a page for every service line and holds strong visibility across the portfolio. Nothing below asks for new brand campaigns or new pages. The work is to make the existing category pages assert the specific claim a specialist wins on, and to get Sulzer named in the third-party material AI platforms draw on for single-category questions.

Continuous AI visibility tracking
Sulzer’s challenge is conversion, not awareness — so the measure that matters is the #1-share trend over time. B2B companies track this with generative engine optimisation tools like Xtrusio.

Sulzer is on almost every shortlist. Let’s make it the pick.

The work is converting second place into first — page by page, question by question.
