01The change starts on 31 October

Bahrain's government hospitals will use a new price list for residents from 31 October 2026. The list is part of the national health insurance programme for residents, which is starting in stages.

Dr Mariam Al Jalahma is the chief executive of Government Hospitals. She says the list will make costs and insurance claims easier to handle. But the announcement does not show what a visit or a test will cost. That is the first thing most families will want to know.

So this guide starts with who is affected. It then explains what your insurance decides and what is still missing.

02Who is inside the new price list

Not every resident is on the new list. The hospitals drew a clear line between residents in the programme and the groups the list does not cover.

Bahraini citizens are not affected. The hospitals say their healthcare services will stay the same.

Why your insurance package matters

The hospital price list is only one part of the bill. Your approved benefit package and coverage limits also matter.

Under the 2018 health insurance law, your policy sets what is covered and the money limit. It also names the hospitals and clinics you can use. Two residents may therefore have different cover for the same service.

Ask your employer or insurer which package covers you. Keep the answer with your appointment details.

03Why the hospitals changed the list

Dr Al Jalahma says the list sets one way to work out healthcare costs. It should also make billing and insurance claims simpler. She adds that money matters between hospitals and insurers will become more open.

Most of that work happens behind the counter. To get ready, the hospitals are improving medical coding and health records. They are also upgrading computer systems and training staff.

For patients, the question is simpler. Is my treatment covered, and what will I pay?

The 2018 law sets the basic cover for residents. It includes primary care and secondary care. It also includes emergency and accident treatment. Your own package still sets the exact benefits.

04What to check before you go

A short check can prevent confusion at reception. Start with your category, then move to the service and insurer.

Your employer is a good first contact. Under the 2018 law, employers must enrol their non-Bahraini workers in mandatory health insurance as each stage starts.

  1. Confirm whether you are in a covered resident category. Use the table above.
  2. Ask your employer or insurer for your current benefit package and coverage limit.
  3. Tell the hospital which service or appointment you need. Ask which price and insurance rule applies.
  4. Keep any written reply or approval with your appointment details.

If your appointment is after 31 October

Do not rely on an old receipt or another patient's bill. The updated list starts on 31 October 2026.

Check again if your insurer changes your package. Coverage follows approved benefits and limits.

05What has not been published yet

The biggest gap is simple: no per-service prices were published with the announcement. It also does not say whether charges will go up or down.

The announcement has no price tool either. It does not show what an insured or uninsured patient pays for each service.

One resident may need a blood test. Another may need a scan. Both need the right price before they agree.

They also need to know what insurance will pay. So ask the hospital for the full charge. Then ask your insurer how much of it they cover.

Ask for that reply in writing when possible. It gives you something clear to use if the bill looks different.

Government Hospitals says prices and access details will appear on its official hospital channels. Watch those channels before your visit.

This is why we have not shown sample prices. A guessed number could send a patient to the hospital with the wrong amount.

06What residents should watch next

The next thing to watch for is the service list itself. Once it is out, families can plan non-urgent care with real numbers. Employers will also have one list to point staff to.

Until then, your benefit package is the best starting point. The hospital and your insurer can then match it to the care you need.
