What should an expat do after losing a passport in Bahrain?

By Gaurav Agarwal · Updated 15 October 2026

Report the lost passport in person at a police station, then use NPRA's lost or damaged passport report service for GCC nationals and foreigners. Your NPRA documents depend on whether you are a sponsored resident, an unsponsored visitor or a GCC national.

01Start with the route that matches your passport

Bahrain's National Portal lists a loss-report service that includes passport loss reports. The service is provided by the Ministry of Interior Police Directorate. The official process says the requester attends a police station in person.

After the police report, non-Bahrainis use the NPRA service for GCC nationals and foreigners. Bahraini citizens use a different lost or damaged passport replacement service.

02Report the loss and keep the official certificate

The police loss-report service requires an in-person visit to a station. Its listed process time is one working day. Keep the loss certificate because NPRA lists a valid loss certificate from the Directorate of Criminal Information and Certificate Section in each foreign-applicant document set.

  1. Take your identity card and attend a police station in person to submit the passport loss report.
  2. Keep the valid loss certificate from the Directorate of Criminal Information and Certificate Section.
  3. Open the NPRA service and choose the department and service type, complete the form and attach the required documents.
  4. Use the document list below for your exact applicant type.

03Prepare the NPRA documents for your situation

NPRA separates applicants into GCC nationals, sponsored foreign residents or visitors, and foreign visitors without a sponsor. Match your documents to the correct row rather than combining the lists.

Sponsored foreign resident or visitorSecurity-services form, employer letter, applicant's ID copy, valid loss certificate, passport photo, sponsor ID copy, sponsor commercial registration copy, and lost-passport copy if available
Foreign visitor without a sponsorSecurity-services form, valid loss certificate, passport photo and lost-passport copy
GCC nationalSecurity-services form, applicant ID copy, valid loss certificate, passport photo and lost-passport copy

04Budget for the NPRA report and certificate

For the foreign-passport reporting service, NPRA lists BHD 4 as the application submission fee and BHD 10 as the certificate fee. It lists one working day as the service time.

NPRA also offers a certificate and multiple-travel-movements record for GCC and foreign nationals to submit to their embassy for a replacement passport. That separate certificate service lists BHD 5 for application submission and BHD 10 for certificate issuance, with one working day of processing.

05Use the NPRA certificate for the embassy stage

The certificate and travel-movement record is specifically described as a document for GCC or foreign nationals to submit to their embassy for a replacement lost passport.

For the website route, NPRA lists a letter addressed to NPRA, a copy of the lost passport if available, a Smart ID copy, representative authorization, the representative's Smart ID copy and a statement from the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science. The page says the certificate is sent by email when ready. On the NPRA-Bahrain app, you log in with eKey and apply as Applicant (Personal); the page says no documents are required.

  1. Confirm with your embassy whether it needs the NPRA certificate or travel-movement record.
  2. For the website route, prepare the NPRA letter, available passport copy, Smart ID copy and police statement.
  3. For the website route, the page says submission must be made by one of the applicant's children or a legal representative, so include the authorization letter and the representative's Smart ID copy.
  4. Follow the embassy's own instructions for the replacement passport.

06Check this list before you start

Keep clear copies of every document you submit. Use the exact applicant category shown on the NPRA page. If the official list does not match your situation, contact NPRA on 17077077. Its page lists Sunday to Thursday, 7:30 am to 7:00 pm.

  1. Police loss certificate is ready.
  2. Passport copy is ready if you have one.
  3. Passport photo is ready.
  4. Applicant ID, sponsor and employer documents are ready if you are in the sponsored category.
  5. You have checked whether your embassy needs the NPRA certificate.

07What the official pages don't say

The Bahrain government pages do not publish one replacement-passport process for every foreign nationality. They also do not state each embassy's fee, appointment method or replacement time. Check those points directly with the embassy that issues your passport.
