Can two expatriates on visit visas perform their nikkah in Bahrain?

By Gaurav Agarwal · Updated 14 October 2026

No, as published. The official pages condition this route on one or both non-Bahraini parties being residents; they do not mention visit visas, so excluding two visitors is our reading of that wording. Marriage page last updated 16 Aug 2026; National Portal checked 14 Oct 2026. Complete the MOJ form from moj.gov.bh, send one PDF to [email protected] with a Bahraini phone number, then await judge approval and an SMS appointment.

01Start with the official route and residency wording

The official Marriage page says non-Bahrainis may marry in Bahrain provided that one or both are residents, while the service page asks for the residency of one betrothed. Neither page mentions visit visas. Our reading is therefore that two people holding only visit visas are outside the published route, but that is not an express government statement about visit visas.

Start with the Ministry of Justice forms page, choose the relevant application form, print it and complete it by hand. Combine the form and attachments into one PDF, email it to [email protected] and include a Bahraini phone number. After verification and judge approval, the department sends an SMS appointment for the Sharia Judicial Building in Riffa, Al Hunainiya.

The Marriage page was last updated on 16 August 2026, and the National Portal was checked on 14 October 2026. Confirm the residency point with the Sharia Procedures Department before making travel or ceremony plans.

  1. Open the MOJ forms page at moj.gov.bh and choose the relevant application form.
  2. Print the form, complete it by hand and gather the required documents.
  3. Combine the form and attachments into one PDF.
  4. Email it to [email protected] and include a Bahraini phone number.
  5. Wait for document verification, competent-judge approval and the SMS appointment.
  6. Attend the Sharia Procedures Department at the Sharia Judicial Building in Riffa, Al Hunainiya when appointed.

02Expect a judge-led process for expatriate Muslims

Bahrain's Marriage page says only a specialised judge can sign and accredit a contract where both parties are expatriate Muslims residing in Bahrain, and marriage officers without the rank of judge cannot perform that task. An authorised marriage-officer listing therefore does not replace the competent-judge route for this expatriate-Muslim case.

The service page says the request is presented to the competent judge. After approval, the department sets an appointment to complete the marriage at the Sharia Procedures Department in the Sharia Judicial Building in Riffa, Al Hunainiya. Treat the appointment as the result of document review, not as the first eligibility check.

For a Sunni contract, Bahrain Family Law includes the guardian's presence and consent and the required witnesses among the contract conditions. Article 29 describes a witness as an adult, sane Muslim man who hears and understands the offer and acceptance. Ask the department which jurisprudential route applies when the parties follow different schools or when a marriage was first contracted abroad.

Do not rely on a private ceremony claim

A private or remote religious ceremony may raise separate religious, home-country and recognition questions. The Bahrain pages reviewed here do not say that a private certificate automatically creates a Bahraini civil or Sharia court marriage record. Confirm recognition before paying a provider or presenting a certificate to an employer, immigration authority or family court.

03Build the document pack before you apply

The service requires the couple, the bride's guardian and two witnesses to be present. It also lists identity copies for those people and passport copies for the couple. Check passport validity and make sure names, spellings and dates match across every document.

The foreign fiancée must provide proof of marital status from her country. Anyone married previously must provide documents confirming current marital status. Foreign papers must be certified by Bahrain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and translated into Arabic.

If one or both parties are non-Bahraini, embassy approval is required and the judge records its details in the marriage contract. The service page particularly names Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Turkey and the Philippines. The general document list also includes the agreed dowry in relation to the husband, while security-field employees need employer approval and Bahrain Defence Force or other security-service personnel need original work approval.

  1. Confirm that one party can show Bahrain residency for this published route.
  2. Open the MOJ forms page at moj.gov.bh and choose the relevant application form.
  3. Prepare passport copies for both parties and identity copies for the couple, guardian and two witnesses.
  4. Obtain the foreign fiancée's marital-status proof and any documents confirming current status after an earlier marriage.
  5. Obtain the applicable embassy approval and keep it for the judge to record.
  6. Record the agreed dowry and obtain any required security-employer or service approval.
  7. Certify foreign documents through Bahrain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and arrange Arabic translations.
  8. Put the completed form and attachments into one clearly ordered PDF.

04Confirm the premarital examination rule

For non-Bahraini couples, the Marriage page lists a medical examination certificate from a hospital in Bahrain. The separate service page states the premarital-certificate item with the scope 'if one of the parties is Bahraini'. Follow the rule that applies to your pairing and ask the department which Bahrain certificate it expects before submission.

The Ministry of Health explains that a couple attends a health centre, signs the consent form, sees a nurse and doctor, and returns for a results discussion. The first visit includes history, basic measurements, examination and blood-test requests. The second visit is used to discuss the results.

Do not assume that a test from another country will be accepted. Ask whether it needs local replacement, certification or translation. Keep the original certificate and a copy for the file.

05Send the application and wait for judge review

Choose the relevant application form on the Ministry of Justice forms page, print it, complete it by hand and attach the required documents. Combine the completed form and attachments into a single PDF, then send it to [email protected].

Include a Bahraini phone number for contact. After verification, the department sends the appointment by SMS; the request is presented to the competent judge, and an appointment follows approval.

The listed process time is 8 working days. Treat that as the published service time, not a guaranteed wedding date. The page does not say what can change the timeline.

  1. Name the PDF clearly with both applicants' names and the service requested.
  2. Check that every scan is complete, upright and readable.
  3. Email the PDF to [email protected].
  4. Include a Bahraini phone number for contact.
  5. Save the sent email, attachment and any acknowledgement.
  6. Do not travel to the Sharia Judicial Building until the department confirms the appointment.

06What the official pages don't say

The public pages do not define every residence document the judge will accept, publish one universal fee or promise approval merely because one party is resident. They also do not confirm that an online or private nikkah certificate automatically becomes a Bahrain marriage record.

Before either visitor changes plans, ask the Sharia Procedures Department four precise questions: which residence proof is accepted, which application form applies, which embassy approvals are needed for both nationalities, and whether a premarital certificate is required for this exact pairing. Keep the written answer with your application pack.

If neither person can become a Bahrain resident, ask your embassies and the competent authority in the country where you can lawfully marry about that country's process. If you later need Bahrain to recognise a foreign marriage, use the separate accreditation route and confirm its certification requirements.

If you are considering a remote nikkah

The Bahrain pages do not confirm that a remote or online ceremony creates a Bahrain marriage record. Family Law Article 28's reference to the place of conclusion is a narrow Sunni clause about a marriage concluded without the guardian's direct participation; it does not address online ceremonies, Bahrain recognition, registration or immigration use. Check the law at the place of contract and ask Bahrain's competent authority about recognition before relying on the ceremony.

If you marry in another country

A marriage completed abroad follows the law and procedure of that place. Article 28's reference to the place of conclusion is a narrow Sunni clause on a marriage concluded without the guardian's direct participation, not a general recognition rule, and the official Bahrain pages reviewed here do not confirm automatic recognition or explain every accreditation step. Ask the foreign authority how to conclude the marriage, then ask Bahrain's Ministry of Justice and your embassies what certification and registration are required.

07FAQs

Can two people on Bahrain visit visas get a court nikkah?

No, as published. The pages require residency of one or both parties but do not mention visit visas. Treat exclusion of two visitors as our reading of that wording and confirm it with the Sharia Procedures Department.

Is one Bahrain resident enough?

It satisfies the published residency condition, but the couple must still meet the document, attendance, nationality and judge-approval requirements.

Can an ordinary marriage officer complete the contract?

No for the published expatriate-Muslim case. A specialised judge handles contracts where both parties are expatriate Muslims residing in Bahrain, and non-judge marriage officers cannot perform that task.

Must the bride's guardian and witnesses attend?

The service lists the bride, groom, bride's guardian and two witnesses as present, with identity copies.

How long does the official service take?

The service directory lists 8 working days. Missing or unclear documents can still delay judge review and appointment scheduling.

Do foreign documents need Arabic translation?

Yes. The service says foreign documents must be certified by Bahrain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and translated into Arabic.

Does an online nikkah certificate automatically work in Bahrain?

The official pages do not confirm automatic recognition. Article 28's reference to the law of the place where the contract was concluded is narrow: it treats a Sunni marriage concluded without the guardian's direct participation as valid after consummation if the contract was valid where it was concluded. It does not address online nikkah certificates, Bahrain registration or immigration use. Ask the Sharia Procedures Department about the separate foreign-marriage accreditation route.
