Resignation Letter in Bahrain: Template and Delivery Checklist

By Gaurav Agarwal · Sources checked 6 October 2026

State your resignation clearly, identify the employer and employee, and give the applicable notice and intended last working day. Article 100 requires written notice delivered against acknowledgement or sent by registered letter with acknowledgement. Keep receipt evidence and separate any early-release or work-permit transfer request.

A resignation letter in Bahrain should identify you and your employer, clearly state that you are ending the employment contract, and record the notice and intended last working day. For a covered private-sector worker, Article 100 requires written notice delivered against acknowledgement or sent by registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt. Keep evidence of delivery: a polished letter without proof of receipt can leave the most important date uncertain.

The examples below are drafting aids, not an official government form. They were prepared from Law No. 36 of 2012 and the current LMRA transfer guidance, checked on 6 October 2026. The focus is on writing, delivering and documenting the letter. A resignation letter does not by itself complete an expatriate work-permit transfer.

Check the facts before choosing a last working day

Find your signed contract and any notice-related amendment. Confirm the employer's legal name, the address supplied for correspondence, your job title and whether you are in an expressly agreed probation period. Article 99 provides for at least 30 days' notice, with continuing obligations during that period. Its following sentence expressly permits a longer agreed notice period when the employer terminates. A disputed contractual period should therefore be checked on its wording and circumstances rather than guessed from a generic template.

Article 21 separately permits either party to terminate during a valid probation period with at least one day's notice. Probation must be expressly stated and ordinarily cannot exceed three months, subject to the specified occupational exception. Do not put one day's notice in a letter simply because your manager still calls you a new employee. Equally, do not use a standard 30-day example without checking whether the probation rule actually applies.

The notice period under Article 100 starts from receipt or refusal to receive the notice, as appropriate. That makes the delivery plan relevant to the date you write in the letter. If the delivery date changes, the intended final date may need correction. Keep the letter clear about the notice being given, and ask the employer to confirm the recorded last working day. See Articles 21, 99 and 100.

What to include in the letter

Use a date, the employer's legal name and the name or position of the recipient. Identify yourself with your full name, job title and employee number where useful. State directly that you are giving notice of resignation from the employment contract. Then state the notice period you are giving and the intended last working day, based on the planned delivery and applicable terms.

Keep any request for an earlier release separate from the resignation itself. Article 100 says notice must not be conditional on a suspending or terminating condition. A sentence such as I resign only if you approve my new visa mixes different questions and makes the document less clear. If you want a shorter period, give unambiguous notice and add a distinct request for a written waiver of part of that period.

You may add a short sentence about preparing a handover and returning company property. A brief expression of thanks is optional. A lengthy account of workplace disagreements is usually unnecessary for an ordinary resignation letter and can obscure the notice. If you believe serious misconduct or breach changes the legal route, get the facts assessed before using a standard voluntary-resignation example. Articles 105 and 106 address different circumstances and procedures; they should not be reduced to a sentence copied into an ordinary template.

A simple resignation-letter example

Replace every bracketed field and verify the notice and date before using this example. It does not assume that a particular notice period applies to your contract.

Date: [date]

To: [recipient name or position]
[employer's legal name]
[address]

Subject: Notice of resignation

Dear [name],

I give notice of my resignation from my position as [job title] with [employer's legal name]. I am providing [applicable notice period] of notice. Based on delivery of this notice on [delivery date], my intended last working day is [date].

I will continue to perform my duties during the notice period and prepare a handover of my current work and company property. Please acknowledge receipt of this notice and confirm the last working day recorded by the company.

Please also confirm the contact responsible for my final employment documents and settlement statement.

Yours sincerely,
[full name]
[employee number, if used]
[signature]
[personal contact details]

The acknowledgement request records receipt; it should not turn the resignation into an application that exists only after approval. Keep a signed copy for your own file. If you submit a bilingual letter, check that both versions state the same notice and date. Use a personal contact method that will remain available after the employer closes your work email account.

How to request release before the notice period ends

Article 103 allows an employer to exempt a resigning worker from all or part of the notice period. Make the request clear, but continue to distinguish the requested date from the date that applies if the request is not granted. Do not assume silence means the remaining notice has been waived. Obtain a written response identifying the agreed final date and any relevant settlement treatment.

Separately from the notice above, I request release from the remaining part of my notice period so that my last working day can be [requested date]. Please confirm in writing whether you agree to waive the remaining notice and confirm the resulting employment-end date.

If the employer agrees verbally, send a factual follow-up recording what was discussed and request confirmation. Do not describe an early departure as approved in your records until there is evidence of the agreement. Article 99(b) provides for compensation where notice is not observed, and Article 99(d) preserves other justified compensation claims. Whether money is due in a particular case depends on the actual terms and facts. The template is intended to make a request reviewable, not to promise that the employer must accept it. See Articles 99 and 103.

Deliver the letter and preserve the evidence

Article 100 describes delivery to the other party or its representative against a signature confirming receipt, or a registered letter with acknowledgement sent to the last address supplied. For an in-person delivery, retain a copy showing the receipt date and acknowledgement. For post, keep the exact letter sent, the postal receipt and the acknowledgement or other delivery record.

If the recipient refuses to receive the notice, Article 100 allows that refusal to be proved by all methods of evidence, and the notice period runs from receipt or refusal as appropriate. Record what actually happened without creating a false acknowledgement or inventing a witness. If proof is disputed, obtain advice on the evidence available. The point is to preserve the event, not to force a signature.

An email copy can help communicate and preserve the text, but do not assume that an email or messaging-app read receipt always replaces the delivery route described in the statute. If you are also seeking an expatriate transfer, LMRA has its own document and posting instructions. Use the address and evidence required for that process as well. The employer's refusal to agree with your decision, proof that notice was received, and approval of a work-permit transfer are three different issues.

Keep the handover separate and factual

Prepare a short list of open work, deadlines, relevant file locations and the person taking over each item. Record company equipment and documents being returned, with an acknowledgement where possible. Article 71 requires ordinary covered employees to safeguard work property, respect confidentiality and return work-related items and records at termination. The law does not prescribe a universal handover spreadsheet, but a dated record makes it easier to show what was completed.

A useful handover entry might identify a customer request, its current status, the next action and where the authorised company record is stored. Avoid copying confidential company material to a personal account to prove that you worked on it. Keep your own employment documents and permitted evidence, while respecting confidentiality and data-access rules. A handover can identify the location of a file without reproducing the file itself.

If a manager asks you to finish work after the recorded last day, clarify the arrangement before performing it. Do not silently change the employment-end date in your own records. Similarly, a missing internal clearance signature should be raised promptly with the responsible person, but it is not an explanation for leaving the statutory payment position undefined. Article 40(b)(4) requires wages and entitlements within seven days where the worker leaves voluntarily. Keep the final statement and raise specific missing items rather than treating a generic clearance checklist as the calculation itself.

If you are moving to another employer, check LMRA separately

The LMRA Expatriate Employee Transfer page, updated 9 September 2026, describes transfer without cancelling the existing permit. It sets different employer-response rules depending on whether the worker has completed 12 months under the current permit. It also contains eligibility conditions, document requirements and fee-payment steps. Sending a resignation letter does not establish that those conditions are met.

The employee instructions describe submitting resignation through Bahrain Post within the notice period, or using specified employer letters. For posted resignation evidence, LMRA asks for the registered-mail receipt or acknowledgement card and refers to the employer's MOIC commercial-register address. The page describes the transfer notice period as 30 days or the contractual period, capped at 90 days from notification to the previous employer. Attribute that description to the transfer procedure rather than rewriting Article 99 as a universal 90-day rule.

LMRA says the worker continues with the current employer until transfer approval and payment of the new permit fees. Check the actual permit status before starting elsewhere. The separate Intention to Transfer service is not a completed transfer. Domestic-worker permits also require their own process; do not assume this non-domestic employee workflow applies unchanged to a household worker.

Resignation letter questions

Does my employer have to approve the letter before notice starts?

Article 100 links commencement to receipt or refusal to receive written notice, with the specified evidence rules. That is different from approval of an early release or an LMRA transfer. Keep the issues separate and preserve delivery evidence.

Must I explain why I am leaving?

The ordinary notice provisions in Articles 99 and 100 do not require a lengthy personal explanation. A concise statement of resignation is usually clearer. If you rely on serious employer wrongdoing to use a different legal route, obtain advice before using a general template.

Can I resign while on annual leave?

Do not automatically apply Article 102's rule to every resignation. That article addresses notice given by the employer while the worker is on leave. Check your notice delivery, contract, leave record and circumstances before confirming the last day.

Does this law cover a domestic worker's resignation notice?

Article 2(b) applies all of Part Twelve, including Articles 99 and 100, to domestic workers. Other rules differ, including work-permit procedures and provisions outside the selected statutory scope. A household worker should not use a company-transfer checklist without checking that distinction.

Which documents should I retain?

Keep the contract, final signed notice, delivery evidence, any written notice waiver, the agreed final date, handover acknowledgement and settlement statement. For an expatriate transfer, keep the separate LMRA application and approval records. Retain factual evidence, not unauthorised copies of business information.
