Utilities Cost in Bahrain: EWA, Cooling, Internet and Municipality Lines
By Gaurav Agarwal · Sources checked 6 October 2026
Calculate from the actual account category and consumption. EWA publishes 32 fils per kWh and 775 fils per cubic metre for non-Bahraini or Bahraini multiple-account domestic use. Cooling, internet and municipality lines can sit outside that simple arithmetic.

01What the top three results miss
The current results were the official EWA tariff page and Bahrain Reddit discussions. EWA supplies the correct tariff; the forum pages supply personal bill anecdotes without a consistent account category, consumption or property setup.
| Result | Useful part | Gap to fix |
|---|---|---|
| EWA tariffs | Current official electricity and water rates | Does not estimate a specific home’s usage or separate cooling. |
| Reddit cost thread | Shows household concerns | Amounts lack consistent meter, tariff and bill evidence. |
| Reddit EWA thread | Discusses included-bill caps | Anecdotes cannot replace the lease and current EWA bill. |

02Calculate the published non-Bahraini rates
This calculator does not estimate consumption, municipality charges, deposits, reconnection, broadband or cooling. Enter those only from the property and current provider records.
03Use the correct EWA tariff category
EWA’s official tariff page, updated 2 August 2026, lists 32 fils per kWh for non-Bahraini or Bahraini multiple-account domestic electricity and 775 fils per cubic metre for water. It separately lists subsidised bands for an eligible Bahraini single domestic account.
Do not copy a subsidised band into an expatriate budget. Confirm account holder, address, domestic category and eligibility on the actual account.

04Read every EWA bill line
EWA’s customer terms say other fees required by law can be itemised separately, including municipality fees. Distinguish electricity use, water use, municipality, prior balance, payment, deposit, connection or reconnection lines.
Use EWA’s service information for bill guidance and official contact details. Ask about an unfamiliar line using the bill and account number, not a general social-media estimate.
05Identify the cooling system
Cooling may run through the electricity meter, a district or building provider, a landlord package or a separate invoice. Ask for the system, account holder, tariff, capacity charge, consumption charge, minimum, deposit, billing cycle and recent unit-specific evidence.
Test the thermostat and equipment. Building orientation, insulation, glazing, floor, appliance efficiency, occupancy and set point change consumption, so a neighbour’s bill is not a quote.

06Quote internet and mobile separately
Check provider availability at the exact building, installation, router, contract term, speed, data policy, early-exit charge and transfer process. A national advertised package may not be available at the selected unit.
Keep setup costs and refundable equipment deposits outside the recurring monthly line. Ask whether a furnished or all-inclusive lease shares a connection or supplies an account dedicated to the unit.
07Write the utility allocation into the lease
Article 26 of the official Property Lease Law places electricity, water, telephone, common services and other fees on the tenant unless the parties agree otherwise. State the account holder, included services, cap, bill evidence, excess formula, payment date and final-account process.
Use EWA’s Open Account service for the applicable occupancy route and documents. EWA also announced bill, deposit and connection-fee access through the official MyGov app.
08Close or transfer the account at move-out
Record final meter readings, request the final bill, settle the account and preserve the closure or transfer result. EWA’s terms say a customer can reclaim the security deposit or remaining balance after account closure and final billing.
Match the handover date, readings and lease obligations. Do not assume returning keys automatically ends liability on an account left open.
09Questions about utilities in Bahrain
What electricity rate applies to expats?
EWA lists 32 fils per kWh for non-Bahraini domestic accounts.
What water rate applies?
EWA lists 775 fils per cubic metre for the same category.
Is cooling included in EWA?
It depends on the property system. Cooling can be metered through electricity or billed separately.
Why is a municipality line on the bill?
EWA’s terms say legally required other fees, including municipality fees, can be itemised on the invoice.
Should utilities be included in rent?
The lease can allocate them, but it should state each service, cap, evidence and excess formula.
How do I end liability?
Use the official closure or transfer route, final readings and final bill.
