Bahrain IBAN: format, checksum and beneficiary checks

By Gaurav Agarwal · Sources checked 6 October 2026

A Bahrain IBAN has 22 characters and starts with BH. Obtain it from the bank, check its format and checksum, then confirm the intended beneficiary. A passing checksum does not prove account existence, ownership or receipt of money.

What is the Bahrain IBAN format?

The 22-character Bahrain IBAN has four fields: BH country code of two letters, two check digits, four uppercase letters identifying the bank and a fourteen-character account field that may include letters or digits.
Structure only, with no example account number. Spaces used for print display are not part of the electronic IBAN. Sources checked 6 October 2026. Sources: cbb.gov.bh · swift.com.

The current SWIFT IBAN Registry, release 103 of September 2026, records Bahrain's structure as BH2!n4!a14!c. In plain language, that means the following fixed positions. Spaces used for readability are not part of the 22-character electronic number. SWIFT registry, section 2.9.

1 to 2BHBahrain country code
3 to 4Two digitsIBAN check digits
5 to 8Four uppercase lettersBank identifier
9 to 22Fourteen letters or digitsAccount field, including any bank-required leading zeros

The final field is alphanumeric. A checker that requires all fourteen account characters to be digits would be too restrictive for Bahrain's national format. Keep any leading zeros exactly as supplied by the bank. Registered Bahrain format.

The CBB's official worked example is BH50 NBOB 0000 1299 1234 56, or BH50NBOB00001299123456 without spaces. This is an illustration from the standard, not beneficiary details to use for a transfer. CBB IBAN standard, Annexure I.

Where should you obtain your own IBAN?

Use your bank's authenticated app, online banking, statement or bank-issued IBAN certificate. Select the intended account first, especially if you hold multiple accounts. BBK confirms that the IBAN and bank SWIFT code are available on statements and through its banking channels. BBK IBAN guidance.

These are published instructions, not a report of testing inside either bank's customer account. If the menu differs or the number is unavailable, ask the bank through its official support channel. Do not reconstruct a missing IBAN from a remembered account number.

When an employer or payer needs your receiving details, share the appropriate bank-issued information through the agreed channel. An IBAN certificate may be more suitable than sending an entire statement containing balances and unrelated transactions. Confirm what the recipient actually needs before sharing additional documents.

How does an IBAN differ from an account number or SWIFT code?

An IBAN represents an account in a standard international format; adopting it does not itself replace the underlying account. In Bahrain, the four-letter bank identifier comes from the start of the bank's BIC or SWIFT code. That four-letter part is not the complete BIC. BBK account-number and IBAN explanation.

Read the field label on the transfer form. If it requests an IBAN, entering only the domestic account number leaves out the country code, check digits and bank identifier. If it separately requests the bank's BIC, obtain that full code from the bank's receiving instructions rather than copying only the four letters within the IBAN.

Do not assume every overseas account follows Bahrain's length or begins with BH. SWIFT maintains country-specific IBAN formats; the destination country's format applies to that beneficiary. SWIFT explanation of national IBAN formats.

What can a format or checksum check establish?

Separate format, checksum and beneficiary checks. A valid format and MOD 97 checksum do not prove account ownership, account status or payment receipt.
CBB defines the checksum test. SWIFT treats beneficiary account verification as a separate capability; availability depends on the bank or service. Sources checked 6 October 2026. Sources: cbb.gov.bh · swift.com.

A basic format check asks whether the length, prefix and character positions fit Bahrain's registered pattern. A checksum check then performs the mathematical test defined by the standard. These are separate checks: a string can look correctly arranged and still fail its checksum.

The CBB procedure converts the IBAN to its continuous electronic form, moves the first four characters to the end, converts letters to numbers using A = 10 through Z = 35, and applies MOD 97. A remainder of 1 means the check digits pass. Its Annexure I demonstrates that result for the official example above. CBB standard, sections 6.1 and 6.2 and Annexure I.

A passing result means the supplied characters satisfy that check. It does not answer whether an account exists, remains open, belongs to the named person or can receive the intended payment. SWIFT describes beneficiary account verification as a separate service from payment validation using reference data and rules. This guide does not establish that your particular bank provides a live name-matching service. SWIFT Payment Pre-validation.

If a bank form rejects the value, return to the source document. Check for missing characters, changed letters and lost leading zeros. BBK specifies a continuous string for electronic payment messages, with groups of four used in printed presentation. Do not change digits until a validator accepts them; obtain the correct bank-issued value. BBK presentation guidance.

This diagnostic table applies the CBB format and checksum standard and the separate checks described by SWIFT Payment Pre-validation. It is a troubleshooting aid, not a catalogue of error messages used by every bank. If a legitimate bank-issued value remains rejected, give the bank the exact error through its secure support process.

How do you confirm the beneficiary before sending?

Before authorising, obtain the bank-issued IBAN, confirm changed banking details using an established contact channel, compare the complete final entry and resolve mismatches. Keep passwords, PINs and authentication codes private.

Treat this as a check of both the banking details and the payment request. A perfectly formatted IBAN can still be the wrong destination for the payment you meant to make.

  1. Get the complete details. Ask the intended recipient for the account-holder name, bank name and bank-issued IBAN, plus any other information your sending bank requires.
  2. Confirm a new or changed destination independently. If an invoice or message introduces different banking details, contact the known recipient through a previously established channel before paying.
  3. Compare the final entry. Check the entire IBAN after copying or typing it. Review any beneficiary name, bank or mismatch information your bank displays.
  4. Resolve discrepancies before authorising. A nickname in your saved beneficiary list is not independent evidence that the account belongs to that person.
  5. Retain the payment record. Keep the bank's reference and transaction status, and have the intended recipient check their actual account when confirming receipt.

This is a practical checking sequence, not a guarantee against fraud or a description of one bank's approval process. BBK warns that phishing messages can request personal or banking information through fake sites and advises accessing banking through its official website. Use the bank's established app or website; do not send passwords, PINs or authentication codes to someone offering to check an IBAN. BBK fraud guidance.

You do not need to publish an IBAN, account statement or identity document in a comment or public forum to understand the format. The official example above is sufficient for learning the structure. A screenshot saying that a payment was initiated is also different from evidence that the intended recipient's bank credited it.

What should you do after entering an incorrect IBAN?

If you have not authorised the transfer, stop and correct the beneficiary using fresh bank-issued details. If the instruction has already been submitted, contact the sending bank promptly through its official channel. Ask it to confirm the payment status and whether cancellation, amendment, tracing or a recall request is available for that transaction.

Have the transaction reference, date, amount, currency and entered beneficiary details ready for the bank's secure process. Explain exactly what is wrong. Avoid sending a second payment until the first payment's position is understood.

The CBB standard warns that an incorrect IBAN can lead to a wrong-account credit, delay or rejection. There is therefore no sound basis for assuming that every mistake will simply bounce back. This guide does not promise a recovery deadline, a refund or a successful recall. CBB standard, section 5.2.

If the problem involves suspected fraud, make that clear immediately. BBK directs fraud victims to its call centre on +973 17207777; customers of other banks should use their own bank's verified contact route. BBK incident reporting.

Bahrain IBAN FAQs

Is an IBAN needed only for an international transfer?

No. BBK also describes its use for domestic electronic bank payments in Bahrain. Follow the receiving-detail fields in your chosen payment service. BBK IBAN uses.

Is the four-letter code after BH and the check digits the complete SWIFT code?

No. It is the bank identifier within the Bahrain IBAN. A separate BIC field needs the full code supplied in the bank's receiving instructions. Do not extend the four letters by guessing. BBK identifier explanation.

Can I remove leading zeros from the account field?

No. Copy the bank-issued electronic value unchanged apart from removing print-layout spaces where required. The full Bahrain structure has fixed field lengths. SWIFT Bahrain registry entry.

Does a successful IBAN check show the account-holder name?

A mathematical check cannot do that. Beneficiary verification is a separate banking capability. If your bank displays a name or mismatch result, follow its instructions rather than treating an independent format checker as stronger evidence. SWIFT verification distinction.

Do I need to upload my statement to this guide?

No. This page has no IBAN submission or account-lookup form. To obtain your details, use your bank's own account screen or certificate. For example, BBK publishes a certificate workflow and ila documents its IBAN copy function.

Can a bank employee ask for my PIN or authentication code to verify an IBAN?

Keep those credentials private. An unsolicited message asking you to validate banking details can be a phishing attempt. Open the bank's established app or website yourself and contact its verified support channel. BBK fraud guidance.

Will an incorrect IBAN always send the money back?

No. Rejection, delay or a wrong-account credit are possible outcomes. Contact the sending bank with the payment reference promptly; neither this guide nor a passing checksum can promise recovery. CBB warning on incorrect IBANs.

Where can a BBK customer report suspected payment fraud?

BBK's official incident route directs customers to its call centre, +973 17207777. Use your own bank's verified incident route if you bank elsewhere. BBK incident reporting.
