How to Verify an Insurance Licence in Bahrain

By Gaurav Agarwal ยท Sources checked 6 October 2026

Search the exact legal name in the Central Bank of Bahrain Licensing Directory. Confirm the category, status and remarks, then match the official domain, quote issuer, policy risk carrier and payment beneficiary. A familiar brand name by itself is not enough.

01Why the category matters

The directory can contain insurers, takaful firms, brokers, aggregators and other regulated businesses. These roles are not interchangeable. The insurer or takaful operator named on the schedule carries the insured risk. A broker or aggregator may arrange the policy but should also identify the risk carrier.

Use the regulator directory and record the date because licence details and status can change.

02CBB licence check, step by step

  1. Open the CBB Licensing Directory directly.
  2. Copy the legal name from the quote, proposal or policy schedule.
  3. Search the legal name, then try the registered brand only if needed.
  4. Open the matching entry and read the category, status and remarks.
  5. Confirm that the category fits the service being offered.
  6. Match the company domain and contact details to an official source.
  7. Confirm the payment beneficiary with the verified firm.
  8. Save a dated screenshot or PDF with your quote and receipt.

If the brand and legal name differ, ask the company to explain the relationship in writing. If a group has several Bahrain entities, confirm which one issues this exact product. Search results and old PDFs can remain online after corporate changes, so use the current directory record.

Repeat the check at renewal if the policy issuer, intermediary, domain or payment instructions have changed.

04Red flags and what to do

Pause if the company cannot provide a legal name, the directory category does not fit, the payment account belongs to an unrelated party, or contact arrives only from a personal address. Do not upload CPR, bank or medical records to an unverified domain.

If a CBB-licensed firm is involved, complain to the firm first and request a reference and written response. The CBB insurance complaint procedure sets out the escalation route. For suspected impersonation, contact the genuine firm through its verified details and preserve the evidence.

05Licence-check questions

Is a broker the same as an insurer?

No. A broker arranges cover; the policy should name the licensed insurer carrying the risk.

Can I trust a company website that says it is licensed?

Use the claim as a starting point, then confirm it in the current CBB directory.

What if I cannot find the brand name?

Search the legal name on the quote and ask the seller for its CBB-registered entity name.

Should I keep a screenshot?

Yes. Save the dated directory result with the quote, policy and payment record.

07Match the company to its regulated role

The CBB insurance authorisation module distinguishes insurance firms, brokers and other regulated roles. A seller may arrange a policy without being the company that carries the risk, so checking only the shop name or website brand is incomplete.

Name on the quoteWhat to confirmWhy it matters
Insurance firmLegal name, licence category and permitted businessThis entity accepts the insured risk
BrokerBroker listing and the insurer named on the quoteThe broker arranges cover
AggregatorRegulated operator and participating insurerThe platform compares or distributes offers
Appointed representativePrincipal licensee and current relationshipThe principal is responsible for the regulated arrangement
Trading brandUnderlying legal entityComplaints and payments need the legal name

The Shield company page, for example, states its regulated broker and aggregator role. That description should still be checked against the current CBB directory.

08Worked example: the brand and policy issuer differ

Hypothetical example: a customer receives a motor quote from a comparison brand. The checkout page names a broker, while the draft certificate names a separate insurer. The customer searches the CBB directory for both legal names, checks the categories, confirms that payment goes to the stated regulated channel and saves the final insurer-issued certificate.

  1. Copy the legal names exactly, including branch or company suffixes.
  2. Search each name in the directory rather than searching only the product brand.
  3. Check the licence category and status shown.
  4. Confirm the insurer on the certificate before paying.
  5. Save the quote, receipt, schedule and certificate together.

A directory match does not prove that every message or payment link using that name is genuine. Verify the domain and contact route independently.

09What to do when the listing is missing or unclear

Pause the purchase. Ask the seller for the precise legal entity, CBB licence category and insurer that will issue the certificate. Do not accept a logo, commercial registration number or overseas licence as a substitute for the relevant Bahrain regulatory entry.

If money has already been paid, preserve the payment record and the full conversation. Use the company's written complaint channel, then follow the CBB complaint procedure where applicable. The CBB complaint form is the official escalation route after the provider stage.

Is a commercial registration the same as an insurance licence?

No. The CBB directory is the relevant check for the regulated insurance role.

Can a licensed broker issue the risk in its own name?

The certificate should identify the insurer carrying the risk. A broker's role is different from the insurer's role.
