Domestic-Worker Insurance in Bahrain: Optional Cover and Employer Checks
By Gaurav Agarwal ยท Sources checked 6 October 2026
Bahrain's LMRA announced an optional insurance system for domestic expatriate employees in 2021. The official LMRA announcement says the scheme can protect employers and workers for insured events. It is separate from the work permit and does not cover every health service. Verify the current product, insurer and benefits before paying.

01What the LMRA announcement says
The dated LMRA announcement of 3 August 2021 describes an optional scheme developed with the CBB and Bahrain Insurance Association. It mentions events such as leaving work contrary to permit conditions, unfair dismissal, injury, disability or death, with repatriation costs in a death case. Those are announcement-level descriptions. The issued policy decides the current insured events, limits, exclusions and evidence.
The announcement also described availability with a new permit or renewal and activation linked to entry or work-permit issuance. Employers should confirm the current process through LMRA and the insurer because procedures can change.

02Do not combine three separate questions
| Question | Evidence to check |
|---|---|
| Is the work permit valid? | Current LMRA permit record and expiry date. |
| Is an insurance policy active? | Policy schedule, effective date, insurer and receipt. |
| What events are insured? | Benefit table, definitions, limits and exclusions. |
| How is health care accessed? | Separate health-care or medical-insurance documents and network. |
| Who can claim? | Employer, worker or legal heirs as defined by the policy. |
| When does cover end? | Policy expiry, permit event, cancellation and termination clauses. |
The Solidarity domestic-helper page is one Bahrain provider route. Verify the legal insurer in the CBB Licensing Directory and compare the issued benefits rather than assuming all products match the 2021 announcement.
The health-insurance guide helps distinguish medical cover from the optional domestic-worker policy.
03Employer checklist before paying
- Match the worker's name and passport details to the permit.
- Confirm the insurer's legal name and policy number.
- Record the effective date and expiry date.
- Check which insured events protect the employer and which protect the worker.
- Read benefit limits, waiting rules and exclusions.
- Check whether repatriation, injury, disability and death benefits are included.
- Ask how a worker's departure, permit cancellation or employer change affects cover.
- Keep the proposal, schedule, wording, receipt and contact details.
04How to prepare for a claim
Notify the insurer promptly and ask for the exact evidence list. Depending on the event, documents may include the policy, permit record, employment documents, incident report, medical evidence, death certificate, legal-heir evidence, travel records and receipts. Follow only the issued policy's requirements.
Do not make assumptions about misconduct, liability or entitlement. Record dates and facts, preserve messages and obtain official documents. If the insurer rejects the claim, request the decision and policy clause in writing. Use the insurer complaint process, then the CBB complaint form if escalation is appropriate.
If the claim is declined, use the rejected-claim review checklist with the written decision and clause.
05Questions about domestic-worker insurance
Is domestic-worker insurance mandatory in Bahrain?
The official LMRA announcement describes the 2021 system as optional. Recheck current LMRA requirements for the permit being issued or renewed.
Does the policy replace a work permit?
No. Verify the work permit and the insurance policy separately.
Does it cover every medical bill?
No assumption is safe. LMRA guidance says the optional insurance does not cover all health services. Check separate health-care arrangements and the policy wording.
Can an existing permit holder buy cover?
The 2021 LMRA announcement said existing permit holders could issue policies aligned with the permit expiry. Confirm the current route before buying.
