Is there a minimum wage in Bahrain?
By Gaurav Agarwal · Updated 11 October 2026
Bahrain's Private Sector Labour Law sets no minimum wage, so expat staff in private firms are paid what their contract says. The BHD 300, 380 and 450 figures are Ministry of Labour benchmarks for Bahraini nationals, and the law itself gives no figure. Filipino domestic workers have a USD 500 monthly minimum, per the Philippine DMW. Confirm any rate with the official body.

01Which minimum applies to you?
Bahrain sets pay benchmarks for some groups and not others. Find your group in the table, then follow the link to the source it names.
| If you are | What applies | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| An expat in a private firm | No set minimum in official sources. Your contract sets your pay. A low contract wage is legal, but unpaid or late wages are not. | Your contract and LMRA |
| A Bahraini national in a private firm | Ministry benchmarks of BHD 300, 380 or 450 by qualification. The Labour Law sets no wage figure, and employers can pay above the benchmarks. | Ministry of Labour and Tamkeen |
| A Bahraini national in government service | The Private Sector Labour Law does not cover government employees. This guide does not cover civil-service pay scales. | Your employer |
| A Filipino domestic worker | USD 500 a month, per the Philippine DMW (February 2026) | Philippine Embassy in Manama |
| An Indian worker | No official rate found for this group | Indian Embassy in Bahrain |
| A domestic worker of another nationality | No official rate found. The law requires clear contract terms for domestic staff. | Your contract and LMRA |
02What the law says for expat staff
Bahrain's private-sector labour law is Law No. 36 of 2012. It was issued on 26 July 2012 and replaced the 1976 law. Its wage chapter says a worker's wage is fixed by the individual contract, a collective contract or the establishment's regulations (Article 37). It bans pay discrimination based on sex, ethnic origin, language, religion or belief (Article 39). It sets no wage figure. The only minimum wage I found in the text is for the last phase of an apprenticeship, which must not be below the minimum wage for similar work (Article 16).
I found no rule in the wage articles that makes a 13th-month salary or a year-end bonus compulsory, so treat either as a matter for your contract. The English text on LMRA's site is an unofficial translation. If it differs from the Arabic text, the Arabic prevails, so check the Arabic if your wage terms are unclear.
- Find the pay line in your signed contract and your offer letter.
- Read the Labour Law page on LMRA's website, and use the Arabic text if the English is unclear.
- Compare your pay with current job ads for your exact role, and ask your employer in writing how the figure was set.
- If pay is late or withheld, raise it with your employer in writing first, then take it to LMRA.

03Pay benchmarks for Bahraini nationals
In a joint statement dated 27 January 2021, the Ministry of Labour and Tamkeen said their benchmarks remain BHD 450 for university graduates, BHD 380 for diploma holders and BHD 300 for high school graduates and below. The statement says employers can pay above these figures. It does not say whether the benchmarks are a legal floor for private employers, and the Private Sector Labour Law itself gives no figure, so treat them as the Ministry's benchmarks and ask the Ministry how they apply to your job.
Tamkeen's Wage Increment Program uses the same BHD 300/380/450 benchmarks as the Ministry (basic wage from BHD 200, up to 1,500). Tamkeen's National Employment Program 3.0 uses higher thresholds, BHD 350, 430 and 500, to decide which new hires qualify for wage support paid to the employer. These are two programmes with two sets of numbers, so match the figure to the programme you are asking about.
Under National Employment Program 3.0, an employer picks one of three support options: 70% of wages in year one, 50% in year two and 30% in year three; 50% for three years; or 30% for five years. The support is subject to a cap. Meeting a threshold does not guarantee support. Tamkeen says every application goes through its own assessment.
| Qualification | Ministry benchmark (2021) | Tamkeen wage support (NEP 3.0) |
|---|---|---|
| High school or below | 300 | 350 |
| Diploma | 380 | 430 |
| University degree and above | 450 | 500 |

04The USD 500 rate for Filipino domestic workers
On 2 February 2026, the Philippine Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said the 'newly prescribed USD 500 minimum monthly wage' applies to Filipino domestic workers in Bahrain. It recognized 14 Bahraini recruitment agencies for complying with it, at a ceremony on 30 January 2026.
This is a Philippine government rate for its own workers, not a Bahraini law. Ask the Philippine Embassy in Manama to confirm the rate that applies today before you agree a salary.

05How your salary must be paid: WPS
Employers must pay wages through licensed banks and financial institutions approved by the Central Bank of Bahrain and registered with LMRA. This is the Wage Protection System (WPS). It controls how and when you are paid, not how much.
The employer uploads a payroll file through LMRA's Expat Management System, then approves it through their bank. LMRA lists the steps as follows.
- The Wage Responsible Person, or the maker, logs in to the Expat Management System with an Advanced eKey.
- They select the company profile and the bank account or wallet the wages will go through.
- They upload the salary details for each employee and confirm the file.
- The bank or payment provider approves the file and transfers the salaries.
- Check the transfer status, and raise any mismatch with your employer.
06Is my salary good, and what is the average?
No law or official benchmark says what a good salary is. Whether BHD 2,500 is good depends on your role, your household and what the offer includes.
This guide gives no average salary and no waiter's pay, because I found no official 2026 figure to cite. Here is a quick way to judge an offer such as BHD 2,500 a month, using only what your contract says.
- Split the offer into basic wage and allowances. Ask which parts are fixed and which can change.
- Check what is included: housing, transport, health insurance and school fees for children.
- Check the flights home and what you get at the end of the contract.
- Compare the total with current job ads for your exact role, then decide if the package fits your household.
07If your pay is late or missing
Keep your signed contract, payslips and bank statements. They are your proof of the agreed pay.
In the English text of Law No. 36 of 2012 on LMRA's site, an employer who pays late owes the worker compensation of 6% a year on the delayed wage for up to 6 months, rising by 1% for each further month of delay, up to 12% a year (Article 40). An employer who breaks the wage chapter faces a fine of BHD 200 to 500 (Article 188). The fine is multiplied by the number of workers affected and doubled for a repeat offence (Article 194). It is an unofficial translation, so ask LMRA to confirm the current figures before you act on them.
A low contract wage is legal for expats, but unpaid or late wages are not. For how transfers work, read Salary Transfers in Bahrain: WPS and Missing Payments.
- Raise the missing pay with your employer in writing, with the dates and amounts.
- Check on your bank statement whether the payment went through WPS.
- If the employer does not respond, contact LMRA through its website.
08Domestic workers in Bahrain
LMRA's summary of Law No. 36 of 2012 says the law introduces clear contract terms for employing domestic staff, to help prevent trafficking. Your written contract is your main protection.
