Car Insurance Refunds and Cancellation in Bahrain

By Gaurav Agarwal ยท Sources checked 6 October 2026

A Bahrain motor policy is not cancelled merely because the car was sold or another policy was purchased. The Liva Bahrain motor wording says third-party liability cancellation requires evidence such as deregistration, transfer of ownership or alternative insurance. Its refund example also depends on no claim and a cancellation fee. Your issued policy controls the calculation.

01Why third-party liability needs evidence

The provider wording says the insurer must obtain specified evidence before cancelling the liability section. This protects against leaving a registered vehicle without the required cover. Do not stop payment or discard the policy without written confirmation.

02Cancellation sequence

  1. Read the cancellation clause and refund table in the issued wording.
  2. State the reason and requested effective date.
  3. Attach transfer of ownership, deregistration or alternative-insurance proof as applicable.
  4. Disclose any accident, claim or open notification during the policy period.
  5. Ask the insurer to confirm cancellation, the retained premium, fee, tax treatment and net refund.
  6. Check that the refund reaches the original or approved payment account.
  7. Keep the cancelled certificate and written confirmation.

03How to check the refund calculation

Ask for the original premium, earned or retained premium, cancellation scale, fee, VAT treatment, paid claims and net refund. A simple daily pro-rata refund should not be assumed unless the wording says so. A claim or total-loss settlement may change or remove the refund.

Ask whether optional benefits, assistance memberships or policy fees are refundable separately. If payment was made through a broker, bank, telecom provider or instalment plan, confirm who receives the refund and whether any unpaid instalment remains due.

Verify the insurer in the CBB Licensing Directory and submit documents through its official channel.

04When the amount or date is disputed

Request the clause and calculation in writing. Complain to the insurer's formal complaint team with the policy, evidence and requested correction. The CBB procedure provides the escalation route after an unsatisfactory insurer response.

05Cancellation questions

Can I cancel at any time?

You may request cancellation, but the insurer must apply the evidence and terms governing the liability section.

Is a refund guaranteed?

No. Claim status, cancellation date, fees and the policy formula matter.

Can I transfer the policy to another car?

Ask the insurer whether endorsement or cancellation and a new policy is permitted.

When does cover actually end?

Use the effective date stated in the insurer's written cancellation confirmation.

07Read four parts of the cancellation clause together

The Liva Bahrain motor wording gives a first-party example of evidence required for cancelling compulsory liability cover. The GIG Bahrain motor terms provide another insurer wording. Your issued policy controls, so use public wordings to understand the questions, not to replace your contract.

Clause partWhat to record
Permitted reasonSale, deregistration, replacement cover or another stated event
EvidenceTransfer record, deregistration proof or new certificate
Effective dateThe date the insurer accepts, not merely the request date
Refund methodShort-period scale, pro rata method, fee and tax treatment
Claim conditionWhether a paid or open claim changes the refund

A motor-liability certificate cannot be treated like an ordinary subscription because the vehicle must remain properly insured when registered and used. Coordinate the cancellation date with the ownership or replacement-cover event.

08Worked example: vehicle sold halfway through the policy

Hypothetical example without an invented refund: the owner sells a vehicle and sends the insurer the official ownership-transfer evidence. The insurer confirms cancellation from an accepted date, applies the policy's stated refund method and shows a fee. The customer checks the original premium, retained premium, fee, tax treatment and net amount rather than assuming exactly half the premium will return.

  1. Provide the evidence listed in the issued wording.
  2. Disclose any accident, notification or open claim.
  3. Ask for the calculation line by line.
  4. Confirm where the refund will be paid if a broker, card or instalment provider was used.
  5. Keep the cancellation confirmation and transfer record together.

If another policy replaced the old one, compare the start and end times to prevent a gap. If duplicate cover was purchased accidentally, send both certificates and receipts and ask each insurer to state its cancellation position.

09When the refund is delayed or lower than expected

First ask for the exact clause and calculation. A lower refund can arise from the policy scale, a cancellation fee, tax treatment, optional benefits, a claim or the accepted effective date. Do not describe the amount as wrong until these inputs are visible.

Verify the legal insurer in the CBB directory. Submit a written complaint with the policy, evidence, requested date, insurer calculation and bank record. The CBB procedure explains the later escalation route. For a registration or ownership-transfer record, use the relevant official traffic process rather than asking the insurer to alter the government record.

Takaful International's motor page is an example of a provider product route. Whether a takaful contribution is returned and how it is calculated still depend on the issued terms and accepted cancellation event.

Is a refund always calculated by unused days?

No. Use the method stated in the policy and the insurer's written calculation.

Can an open claim stop a refund?

It can affect the result under the policy. Disclose the claim and ask for the governing clause.
