Renew Car Insurance in Bahrain: Documents, Payment and Registration

By Gaurav Agarwal ยท Checked 5 October 2026

Renew the motor policy with your licensed insurer first, confirm the new policy dates and certificate, then renew the vehicle registration separately. GDT requires at least third-party insurance valid for a full year from the vehicle's registration month. Do not assume that paying the insurer also renews the registration.

01The shortest renewal route

  1. Open your current insurer's official website, app or renewal link.
  2. Retrieve the policy using the details the insurer requests, commonly the policy reference or vehicle details.
  3. Review the proposed cover, insured value, excess, named drivers, repair terms, optional benefits and dates.
  4. Correct any vehicle, owner or driver detail before paying.
  5. Pay through the insurer's official checkout and save the receipt.
  6. Download the renewed certificate or policy schedule and confirm the start and end dates.
  7. Continue separately to vehicle-registration renewal when insurance and inspection requirements are ready.

02What to have ready

Insurers set their own renewal fields, so there is no universal document list for every company. Keep the existing policy reference, vehicle number and registration details, policyholder identity details, driver's licence details, current contact information and any requested no-claims evidence available. Upload only what the official insurer route asks for.

If the registered owner, vehicle use, main driver or vehicle value has changed, disclose the change before accepting the renewal. The certificate used by Traffic must match the registered vehicle and policyholder details.

03Compare the renewal before paying

Compare like with like. A lower premium can reflect a higher excess, narrower repair choice, different territorial cover or fewer benefits. Check:

  • Third-party only, third-party fire and theft, or comprehensive cover.
  • Vehicle value and the basis used after a total loss.
  • Own-damage and young-driver excesses.
  • Agency, approved-garage or other repair basis.
  • Named-driver and permitted-driver conditions.
  • Roadside assistance, replacement car and GCC extensions.
  • Flood, natural-peril, off-road and optional add-on wording.

These terms come from the policy schedule, wording and endorsements. A marketing summary does not override them.

04Pay and verify the renewed policy

Use the insurer's official domain or app. After payment, save the receipt, certificate, policy schedule and wording. Check the legal insurer name, policy number, vehicle number, policyholder, cover type and effective dates.

GIG's published Bahrain renewal steps, for example, say customers can enter policy or vehicle details, review the renewal quote and options, pay online, and receive the renewed policy by email or SMS. Solidarity advertises renewal and policy-document management through its own portal or app. Those are provider examples; follow your insurer's current route.

05Hand the policy off to vehicle registration

GDT's current service page says the vehicle must have insurance for one full year from the registration date, must pass any required technical inspection, and must have traffic contraventions settled. For private vehicles, inspection applies after the vehicle is more than five years old.

Once the policy is active, follow the separate vehicle-registration renewal guide. Use the inspection guide if the vehicle is due for inspection.

06If the renewed policy is not recognised

  1. Check the certificate dates, vehicle number, plate type and policyholder name.
  2. Confirm that payment produced a policy, not only a quote or pending transaction.
  3. Ask the insurer to confirm that the policy is active and that the vehicle details were transmitted correctly.
  4. Check the registration route again after the insurer confirms the record. The official sources do not publish a universal update time, so do not rely on an invented waiting period.
  5. Do not pay a second time until the insurer has reconciled the first payment.
  6. If the insurer does not resolve a written complaint, use the CBB complaint procedure.
