Car Insurance Excess and Agency Repair in Bahrain
By Gaurav Agarwal ยท Sources checked 6 October 2026
The excess is the amount shown in the policy schedule that the insured may have to pay for a claim. Agency repair applies only when the schedule or wording includes it. The Liva Bahrain motor wording defines both terms and says an approved garage is used when agency repair is not shown.

01Excess and repair location solve different questions
| Term | What to check |
|---|---|
| Standard excess | Amount, claim type and when it is recoverable |
| Additional excess | Young driver, inexperienced driver or named conditions |
| Agency repair | Included vehicles, age limit and authorised dealer |
| Approved garage | Who selects it and workmanship warranty |
| Parts basis | New, alternative, used, depreciation or betterment terms |
| Total loss | Valuation and settlement basis |
The Liva wording treats the schedule as the place for the applicable excess and special terms. Read the issued schedule rather than relying on a verbal promise.
02Agency eligibility is product-specific
Liva Bahrain advertises agency repair for new cars for a defined initial period. The Gulf Union FAQ describes its own age-based agency and approved-garage approach. These are provider examples, not a single market rule.
Ask what happens when the car ages out during the policy year, whether agency repair is optional, how imported vehicles are treated, and whether the dealer must be pre-approved. Compare the extra premium against the car's age, warranty, repair technology and resale concerns.

03Buying checklist
- Find every excess in the quote and schedule.
- Ask which accidents trigger each excess.
- Confirm agency repair in writing.
- Record any vehicle-age or model restriction.
- Ask who selects the repairer and approves estimates.
- Check parts, depreciation and betterment terms.
- Check replacement-car and roadside benefits separately.
- Keep the inspection report, photographs, quotation and schedule.
Verify the insurer in the CBB Licensing Directory.
Ask for examples using the actual vehicle and drivers. Confirm the payable excess for an at-fault collision, an unidentified third party, theft, flood, windscreen damage and a young or newly licensed driver. The quotation should also state whether multiple excesses can apply to one event.
If the car contains cameras, sensors or driver-assistance equipment, ask how calibration is handled and whether the approved repairer can complete it. Record who pays if the insurer authorises a repair method that differs from the authorised dealer's estimate.
04Do not authorise repairs too early
After an accident, complete the required traffic process, notify the insurer and obtain the claim number. Ask whether the vehicle may be moved, which garage should inspect it and whether repairs need written approval. Preserve photographs, the accident report, estimate, parts list and messages.
If the repair location, excess or parts basis is disputed, request the insurer's written decision and policy clause. The CBB insurance complaint procedure uses the insurer complaint team first, followed by CBB escalation for an unsatisfactory response.
05Excess and agency-repair questions
Is the excess always BD 50?
No market-wide amount is stated here. Use the issued schedule and check additional excesses.
Does comprehensive insurance guarantee agency repair?
No. Agency repair must be included under the schedule and wording.
Can I choose any garage?
Only if the insurer approves it under the policy. Ask before authorising work.
Who pays when I insist on agency repair outside cover?
Ask for the insurer's approved amount and written terms before deciding. Any difference may fall to the policyholder.
07Compare the full repair basis before the premium
The GIG Gulf Bahrain Motor Prestige handbook gives a first-party example of agency-repair eligibility being tied to the vehicle's age and the issued cover. The GIG motor page also lists agency repair within particular plan benefits. These are provider examples, not a market-wide promise.
| Quote item | Question to ask | Where the answer belongs |
|---|---|---|
| Standard excess | What amount applies to a normal own-damage claim? | Schedule or excess table |
| Young or inexperienced driver excess | Does an extra amount apply? | Endorsement or wording |
| Agency repair | Which dealer, vehicle age and claim types qualify? | Schedule and repair endorsement |
| Approved garage | Who selects the repairer and guarantees work? | Claims and repair clause |
| Depreciation | Can parts or total-loss calculations reduce payment? | Basis-of-settlement clause |
| Betterment | Can the customer contribute for improved or new parts? | Repair settlement terms |
08Worked example: lower premium, higher claim cost
Hypothetical example: Quote A costs less but uses an approved garage and a higher excess. Quote B costs more, includes agency repair for the vehicle's present age and shows a lower excess. The buyer compares the annual premium difference with the amount payable on one likely own-damage claim and the value placed on dealer repair.
- Write down every excess that can apply to the driver.
- Confirm agency eligibility on the proposed start date.
- Ask whether windscreen, flood or theft has a separate excess.
- Record how repair disputes and supplementary estimates are handled.
- Save the quote and the issued schedule to detect any change.
Do not infer agency repair from the car's age alone. It must appear in the issued cover.
09When the repair offer differs from the schedule
Before authorising work, ask the insurer to identify the repair clause, excess, parts treatment and approved repairer in writing. Preserve the accident report, inspection, estimate and photographs. Verify the insurer in the CBB directory and use the CBB complaint procedure after the insurer's complaint stage if the contract dispute remains unresolved.
Can several excesses apply to one accident?
They can if the issued wording and schedule provide for different applicable excesses. Ask for the calculation and clauses in writing.
Does agency repair mean the dealer decides coverage?
No. The insurer decides coverage under the policy, while the authorised repairer assesses and performs the work within the approved scope.
