Travel Insurance Bahrain: Compare Cover, Exclusions and Claims
By Gaurav Agarwal · Sources checked 6 October 2026
Choose travel insurance by the certificate and policy terms, not the logo or medical headline. Match the territory, exact trip dates, traveller ages, emergency-medical limit, excess, repatriation wording, cancellation triggers, baggage sublimits, activities and claim evidence. For a Schengen visa, EU Visa Code Article 15 sets a EUR 30,000 minimum and specific territorial and repatriation requirements.

01Schengen travel-insurance certificate requirements
Article 15 of the EU Visa Code requires applicants for one or two entries to prove travel medical insurance for the intended stay. It must cover the member-state territory, be valid throughout the planned stay and have at least EUR 30,000 coverage.
The same official text requires cover for costs connected with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment and death during the stay. Multiple-entry applicants must prove cover for the first intended visit and sign the relevant statement for later stays.
For a Schengen application, use the Schengen insurance certificate checklist alongside the destination authority’s current requirements.
02Compare the terms that change what a claim pays
| Policy field | Question to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency medical | What is the total limit, excess and any condition sublimit? | A large headline limit can still have smaller sublimits or an amount you pay first. |
| Territory and dates | Are every destination, transit and day covered? | A certificate outside the correct area or period may fail both visa and claim needs. |
| Pre-existing conditions | What is excluded, declared or covered only for emergencies? | Medical history can affect eligibility and payment. |
| Cancellation and curtailment | Which named events trigger cover, and when must the policy be bought? | A change of mind is usually different from an insured event. |
| Baggage and valuables | What are the total, per-item and valuables sublimits? | The total limit may not apply to one phone, laptop or bag. |
| Delay | How many hours must pass and what evidence is required? | Policies can require a carrier statement and receipts after a stated threshold. |
| Activities | Are sports, work, driving or cruises covered? | Higher-risk activities can be excluded or need an extension. |
| Assistance and approval | Must you call before treatment or evacuation? | The emergency-assistance route can be part of the claim conditions. |
Read the schedule and wording together. The schedule identifies the people, plan, dates and selected options; the wording defines benefits, exclusions, evidence and procedure.
03What current Bahrain provider pages show
The Solidarity Bahrain travel page, GIG Gulf travel page and SNIC travel page ranked as the first three organic results for this Bahrain keyword when researched. All three are insurer pages. Use them to obtain the current quotation and policy documents, then compare the same rows.
| Provider page | Useful for | Still verify in the issued documents |
|---|---|---|
| Solidarity Bahrain | Official product and purchase starting point. | Medical limit, excess, territory, cancellation triggers, baggage sublimits and claim route. |
| GIG Gulf | Benefits, exclusions guidance and downloadable policy information. | Selected plan, dates, traveller eligibility, options and the legal issuer. |
| SNIC | Published plan table including medical, delay and baggage examples. | Policy wording, sublimits, excess, excluded events and required approvals. |

If the quote uses GIG branding, use the GIG issuer and travel-claim guide to match the company and service route.
For a SNIC option, use the SNIC travel service guide alongside the actual policy wording.
04Read exclusions before comparing premiums
Look for pre-existing medical conditions, travelling against medical advice, undeclared activities, intoxication or illegal acts, unattended baggage, valuables left in checked luggage, known events, work-related travel and destinations affected by sanctions or official restrictions. The exact list is insurer and plan specific.
Also check general conditions: reasonable care, notification time, original documents, prior approval, use of the assistance provider and the law governing the policy. A benefit table says what may be covered; the exclusions and conditions explain when payment can be reduced or refused.
05A Bahrain travel-insurance buying checklist
- List every traveller exactly as shown in the passport, including date of birth.
- List all destinations and transit points, plus departure and return dates.
- State whether the trip is leisure, business, study, work or includes sports.
- For a visa, copy the consulate or visa-centre certificate requirements.
- Verify the legal insurer in the CBB Licensing Directory.
- Compare the medical limit, excess, repatriation, cancellation, baggage, delay and assistance rows.
- Read exclusions for existing conditions, pregnancy, activities, valuables and known events.
- Check whether the policy is single-trip or annual and how maximum trip length is calculated.
- Confirm emergency telephone numbers and whether preapproval is required.
- Save the quote, receipt, schedule, wording and certificate offline before departure.
Single trip or annual cover
A single-trip policy is built around one departure and return period. An annual policy can cover several trips during its policy year, but it can still limit the length of each journey. Compare the maximum days per trip, eligible ages, home-country start requirement and renewal terms. Do not assume an annual certificate covers an uninterrupted year abroad.
Family and group policies
Check that every traveller is named or fits the policy definition. Ask how children, dependants who travel separately and travellers of different ages are treated. If one person cancels, read whether cancellation cover applies to the other travellers and under which relationship definition.
Buy early enough for cancellation cover
Travel medical cover concerns events during the insured journey. Cancellation cover concerns events before departure and can depend on when the policy was purchased, when the insured event arose and whether the event was already known. Read the trigger and timing clauses before paying for non-refundable bookings.
Public pages may describe plan families. Your issued certificate must contain the correct names, dates and territory. Correct errors before the trip starts.
06Build the claim file while evidence still exists
| Incident | Evidence to obtain |
|---|---|
| Medical emergency | Assistance reference, medical report, diagnosis, itemised invoices, payment receipts, prescriptions and discharge record. |
| Theft | Destination police report, list of stolen items, ownership evidence and any carrier or hotel report. |
| Baggage delay | Airline property-irregularity or delay report, delivery time confirmation and essential-purchase receipts. |
| Trip cancellation | Booking and cancellation terms, proof of payment, refund record and evidence of the insured trigger. |
| Travel delay | Carrier statement with scheduled and actual times, rebooking details and eligible receipts. |
| Passport loss | Police report, embassy or consulate record and replacement-document receipts. |
The GIG Gulf claims page specifically tells travellers to call for a medical emergency, obtain a destination police report for theft and obtain an airline report for baggage delay. Its travel-claim page says to retain originals and states a 15-working-day processing period after supporting documents are received. Other insurers may use different forms and periods, so follow the wording and current claim page for your legal issuer.
07Common problems before and after travel
The certificate has the wrong name or date
Contact the insurer before departure and ask for a corrected certificate. Do not edit the PDF yourself.
The insurer wants originals
Scan every document before sending it. Use tracked delivery if paper originals are required and keep the receipt.
The airline has not issued a delay or baggage report
Request it at the airport and through the airline's written channel. Save the baggage tag, boarding pass, reference and delivery message.
A claim was rejected
Request the decision and exact policy clause in writing. Compare the reason to the schedule and evidence, then follow the insurer complaint route. Use the rejected-claim guide and, after the insurer process, the CBB complaint form.
08Questions about travel insurance from Bahrain
How much medical cover does a Schengen policy need?
EU Visa Code Article 15 sets a minimum of EUR 30,000 and requires territorial and repatriation cover for the planned stay.
Is the cheapest travel insurance enough?
Price cannot answer that alone. Compare territory, dates, medical limit, excess, repatriation, cancellation triggers, baggage sublimits, activities, exclusions and claim procedure.
Can I buy travel insurance after leaving Bahrain?
Eligibility and waiting rules are policy specific. Ask the insurer before purchase and obtain the answer in the issued wording or written confirmation.
Does travel insurance cover cancelled flights?
Only if the policy includes the relevant cancellation or delay benefit and the event fits its listed triggers, conditions and evidence rules. Airline compensation and insurer benefits are separate questions.
Which Bahrain travel insurer is best?
There is no official best ranking. Verify the licensed legal issuer in the CBB register, then compare the issued terms for your travellers and trip.
