Claim end-of-service benefits in Bahrain: records and payment checks

By Gaurav Agarwal · Sources checked 6 October 2026

Check the required employment or permit status, verify your bank record and prepare an IBAN certificate. Apply through SIO with advanced eKey, retain the reference and reconcile the payment separately from pre-March 2024 dues and unpaid employer balances.

To claim an end-of-service benefit held by Bahrain's Social Insurance Organization (SIO), first check that your employment has ended and the required employment or permit status is recorded. Verify your bank details, prepare an IBAN certificate, then use the official benefit-request service with advanced eKey. Keep the SIO claim separate from earlier service dues or unpaid amounts that remain an employer question.

Checked 6 October 2026. This guide covers claim preparation, submission and payment checks for the applicable non-Bahraini private-sector scheme. It does not calculate an individual entitlement or replace the SIO login and contribution-statement guide.

1. Check which employment and service period the claim covers

Two service periods: employer dues for service before 1 March 2024, and the applicable SIO record and paid contributions for service from 1 March 2024. Coverage and exclusions must be confirmed.
The scheme began on 1 March 2024. Prior service and unpaid employer amounts require separate reconciliation. Decision 109 and the SIO FAQ checked 6 October 2026. Sources: lloc.gov.bh · sio.gov.bh · bahrain.bh.

The scheme began on 1 March 2024. The official Decision 109 of 2023 covers non-Bahraini private-sector workers within the employment-injury insurance branch, subject to its exclusions. These include GCC citizens covered by the GCC insurance-protection extension system. Nationality alone does not establish eligibility.

The Prime Minister Office announcement of 12 December 2023 confirms the 1 March 2024 commencement. The announcement date and the first covered service date are different: do not move the split back to December 2023.

Split your records into two periods:

  • Service before 1 March 2024: article 14 leaves this period under the private-sector labour law. SIO's current gratuity FAQ says preceding-period dues can be claimed from the employer after employment ends.
  • Service from 1 March 2024: check the applicable SIO record and contributions actually paid. An SIO payment should not be assumed to settle every part of your employer's final account.

The official claim directory lists the required LMRA work-permit states as “Pending Departure”, “Departed” or “Transferred”. For Golden or Platinum Residency holders, it says the employer must end the employment relationship in SIO's system before the employee applies. The LMRA status guide can help you inspect the permit record.

A move to another company can qualify according to SIO's FAQ. However, article 6 of the decision says a transfer between branches or establishments of the same employer is not itself a service-ending event for this benefit. Ask SIO to confirm your route if the record does not match the actual employment change.

Keep the original employment start date

The scheme boundary changes who holds the relevant benefit; it does not restart your service clock. Article 5 measures the first three years from when employment with that employer began, and article 13 specifically addresses people who already had more than three years' service when the scheme started. A record starting SIO contributions in March 2024 is therefore not proof that March 2024 was your original joining date. Decision 109, articles 5 and 13.

For example, someone who joined the same employer in February 2020 had already passed three years by March 2024. Keep that original joining record when checking the contribution history. This is a service-period illustration, not an entitlement calculation; unpaid contributions, applicable wage and any employment break still need individual review.

2. Prepare the records and required bank document

The service directory explicitly requires an IBAN certificate. Separately, keep the following records ready to check the claim or explain a discrepancy. This is a preparation checklist, not a claim that every item is a mandatory upload:

  • Your employment start and actual end dates, with the relevant employer identified.
  • The contract, termination or resignation correspondence and final-settlement breakdown.
  • Relevant salary records and the SIO contribution statement.
  • Any payment already received from the employer, with its date and stated purpose.
  • The bank's current IBAN certificate and the reference for any correction already requested.

Obtain the certificate from the bank holding the account you intend to use. For example, BBK documents an online IBAN Certificate workflow under the selected account's details. This is a bank-specific example, not a requirement to bank with BBK. Compare your name and complete IBAN against the SIO record; a bank-account number typed into an email is not the directory's requested certificate.

Use the existing contribution-statement instructions to review registered salary and periods. A statement helps identify a mismatch; it is not a substitute for the amount and period confirmed in the benefit claim.

Keep identity, salary and bank documents private. Provide them only through the official application or a verified support channel. Do not post an unredacted claim screen in a public forum.

3. Verify the bank account and submit the request

SIO benefit request workflow: check employment status, verify bank details, use advanced eKey and Benefits Request then New, attach the IBAN certificate and retain the submission reference.
The official directory specifies the IBAN certificate and public menu route. Other employment records are preparation material, not a universal mandatory upload list. Checked 6 October 2026. Sources: bahrain.bh · sio.gov.bh.

SIO's FAQ says the first step is to verify that your bank-account details are included in its website records. Check the recorded account against the bank-issued certificate before applying. If it is outdated or rejected, resolve that issue with SIO and the bank rather than substituting another person's account.

Resolve login access before the claim

SIO Individual eServices explains that its sensitive personal services use eKey authentication. The claim directory specifies Advanced eKey. The official eKey explanation distinguishes Standard, Advanced and the newer eKey 2.0 app. Start from the official SIO service and follow the authentication method it offers; do not assume that having a Standard eKey alone satisfies every service requirement. If access fails, resolve authentication separately from a dispute about your benefit.

  1. Open the Payment of the End-of-Service Benefit for Non-Bahrainis service.
  2. Authenticate using the advanced eKey required by the directory.
  3. Open Benefits, select Benefits Request, then choose New.
  4. Review the employment and bank information requested by the live form, attach the IBAN certificate and correct any mismatch before submitting.
  5. Retain the submitted request, its reference and any acknowledgement for follow-up.

The public directory verifies the menu route above. The authenticated form was not accessed for this guide, so field order and later screens are not reproduced. If the interface differs, start again from the official service entry or ask SIO which current route to use.

Application fee: SIO's current FAQ says it does not charge for submitting this gratuity application. That statement does not establish whether your bank charges to issue a certificate.

4. Read the claim status separately from bank credit

Keep three checks separate: the request was submitted, SIO has processed it, and the money has reached the intended bank account. A saved application or acknowledgement is not a bank receipt. Compare any payment advice with the actual credit and keep both records.

The official timing pages differ. The Bahrain service directory lists three working days, while SIO's gratuity FAQ says payment within five working days from application. Both were checked on 6 October 2026. Do not treat either as a guaranteed credit date for a particular claim; ask SIO for the status and expected next step using your reference.

SIO also warns that incomplete or incorrect information can delay processing or lead to rejection. If the request is returned, read the actual reason and correct that item. Do not guess what a status label means or assume that resubmitting the same information will resolve it.

5. Reconcile amounts that remain an employer question

Reconciliation checklist comparing the contribution record, processed SIO request and actual bank credit, while recording prior service and unpaid employer differences separately.
The SIO service bases the benefit on contributions paid. Reconcile evidence for each period and payment, without treating this checklist as an entitlement calculation or payment deadline. Checked 6 October 2026. Sources: lloc.gov.bh · bahrain.bh · sio.gov.bh.

The public claim service bases the SIO benefit on employer contributions received and directs the worker to claim an unpaid balance from the employer. Articles 8 and 10 of Decision 109 connect the covered service and payment to contributions paid; article 10 also addresses contribution differences following a wage increase.

Ask for a breakdown that keeps these lines separate:

Line to reconcileEvidence to compare
Pre-scheme serviceEmployment dates and the employer's calculation for the period before 1 March 2024.
SIO claimThe period and amount shown in the processed request, payment advice and bank credit.
Unpaid or disputed differenceThe identified missing period, salary discrepancy or unpaid contribution, with the employer's response.
Other final employment duesSeparate salary, leave or other disputed items in the final-settlement breakdown.

This comparison is a recordkeeping method, not a determination that a particular amount is owed. Avoid combining every line into a single “gratuity received” total before you know what each payment covers.

Three situations that need different follow-up

These questions follow the official claim conditions and SIO guidance on bank details and incomplete information. They do not assign a meaning to an unpublished status code. Ask for the specific reason or next action and retain the response before lodging a duplicate request.

6. Send the issue to the right official route

For application access, a bank-detail problem, returned information or an unexplained SIO payment, use SIO's current contact page. It lists the contact centre on +973 17000707 and a Tawasul route for enquiries and complaints. Give the claim reference, relevant period, issue and previous response through the verified channel.

For an employer refusing to pay gratuity, SIO's FAQ directs workers to LMRA's Expatriate Protection Centre. Other employment disputes can require a different route. The Bahrain labour-law guide explains the distinction between a legal consultation, an active-worker complaint and individual-dispute settlement. Check the official conditions before choosing one.

Keep a dated record of the response and next action. A dispute about the employer's balance and a query about the SIO transfer may need separate references, even when they arise from the same employment ending.

General information only. This guide is not personal legal or financial advice. Eligibility, entitlement, disputes and applicable deadlines depend on the employment facts and current law. Ask SIO or the relevant authority to confirm the process for your case.

End-of-service claim FAQs

Can I claim while I am still working for the same employer?

This claim is tied to the end of that employment relationship. SIO describes the benefit as a lump sum at employment end. A transfer between branches of the same employer is not, by itself, an ending event under the scheme. SIO gratuity FAQ; Decision 109, article 6.

Must I leave Bahrain permanently before applying?

The directory also lists Transferred as an eligible LMRA status, alongside Pending Departure and Departed. SIO says a move to another company can qualify for the previous employment period. Confirm that your actual record meets the service conditions. Official permit-status conditions.

What if I have Golden or Platinum Residency?

The employer must first end the employment relationship in SIO's system, according to the claim directory. Do not assume a residence permit remaining valid means the employment-ending record is complete. Residency-specific condition.

Does SIO pay my service before March 2024?

The earlier period remains subject to the private-sector labour-law basis and is an employer claim. Keep it as a separate line when reconciling SIO payment and final settlement. Decision 109, article 14; SIO preceding-period guidance.

Did my first three years restart when the scheme began?

No. Keep the original service start date with the employer. The decision explicitly accounts for employees whose service already exceeded three years at commencement. Decision 109, articles 5 and 13.

Is there an application fee or a guaranteed payment date?

SIO says the gratuity application is free. Its five-working-day payment statement differs from the directory's three-working-day process time. Neither is a promise that your own bank will be credited on that date. Use the claim reference to ask about delays. SIO FAQ; Service directory.

Is an IBAN certificate the same as proof of receipt?

No. The certificate supplies bank details for the request. Check the actual incoming bank credit separately from submission or processing acknowledgements. The directory lists the certificate as an application attachment. Required attachment.

Where do I ask about a returned or unpaid claim?

Use SIO contact support for the request, bank record or processing issue. For employer refusal, the SIO FAQ directs workers to LMRA's Expatriate Protection Centre. Explain which period or payment is disputed so the enquiry reaches the relevant route.
