To open a personal bank account in Bahrain, choose the account first, check its eligibility, prepare your identity and residence documents, then apply through the bank’s official app or branch. Salary evidence, the opening deposit and ongoing balance requirements depend on the product. A current-account salary threshold is not a rule for every bank account.
Checked 6 October 2026. This guide compares published requirements from selected banks and gives you a practical application checklist. It covers personal accounts, not company account formation. General information only, not personal financial advice or a guarantee of bank acceptance.
1. Choose the account for the job you need it to do
Start with your reason for opening the account: receiving salary, making everyday payments, holding savings or using a chequebook. Ask about each feature explicitly. An account marketed for salary payments does not establish that every credit or cheque facility is included.
| Account or route | Published purpose or feature | How to start |
|---|---|---|
| BBK Current Account | Chequebook facility. Published opening amount: BHD 300. Product-specific salary requirements apply. | Visit a branch using the official current-account requirements. |
| NBB Express Saver | Local-currency account suitable for salary transfers, with an international debit card. | NBB Digital Banking app or branch, as described on the official product page. |
| ila account | App-based opening for people living in Bahrain aged 18 or above. | Download the app from the bank’s own links; the opening FAQ describes identity verification and a selfie. |
| Arab Bank digital onboarding | Current or savings account through Arabi Mobile, subject to eligibility. | Use the Bahrain onboarding page. The bank may request further documents and a branch visit. |
These examples show different application routes; they are not a full market ranking. If you need Islamic banking, verify the exact account contract and services. For example, Al Baraka’s current-account page describes a non-profit-paying account with a chequebook and an opening minimum of BHD 200 or equivalent. Al Baraka product page, checked 6 October 2026.

2. Confirm eligibility for your circumstances
Tell the bank whether you are a Bahraini citizen, a non-Bahraini resident, self-employed, a student or applying from outside Bahrain. Do not assume an app accepts your circumstances because another customer opened an account there.
BBK Current Account: its published minimum salary is BHD 500 for Bahrainis and BHD 700 for non-Bahrainis. The page also lists documentation for self-employed applicants. Those figures belong to this current account; they should not be copied into a general rule for savings accounts or other banks. BBK requirements, checked 6 October 2026.
NBB Express Saver: its page lists Bahraini citizens and non-Bahraini residents or expatriates as eligible customer groups. The reviewed page does not specify a minimum salary. That omission is not confirmation of unconditional acceptance. Confirm the current income requirements; the verified balance fee appears below. NBB eligibility, checked 6 October 2026.
Non-resident routes exist, but their scope matters
BBK Al Hayrat: sections 5.1 and 5.2 of the bank's February 2026 terms allow individuals of all nationalities, resident or non-resident in Bahrain, above age 18, with an opening deposit of BHD 50 or more. Parents or legal guardians may open for minors. This is a prize-linked savings account, subject to its other terms and exclusions. It does not prove eligibility for BBK Current, a chequebook or every payment feature. BBK account terms.
BisB GCC onboarding: the bank advertises a remote route for GCC citizens. Its general terms specify GCC nationals residing in GCC countries and aged 18 or above, subject to account conditions. A GCC residence permit held by a non-GCC citizen is not the same eligibility category. The product age rules still apply: the terms set 21 for Current Accounts and 18 for most other accounts, with a separate Vevo exception. BisB GCC onboarding; BisB account eligibility terms.
Newly arrived resident: ila's opening FAQ requires living in Bahrain. If your CPR or residence documentation is pending, ask the selected bank which current route fits your actual status. Neither an advertised non-resident savings account nor another customer's experience guarantees your application will be accepted. ila opening criteria.
3. Prepare the documents for the chosen bank
Use the bank’s checklist for the actual product. Keep names, identity numbers and residence details consistent across the application and supporting documents. For a branch route, confirm which originals and copies to bring before travelling.
| Situation | Document example | Official source and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Bahraini applying for BBK Current | Original CPR or Smart Card, passport and salary certificate or payslip. | BBK Current Account |
| Non-Bahraini applying for NBB Express Saver | Valid passport, residence permit and identification document. | NBB Express Saver |
| Employed ila applicant asked for further evidence | Salary certificate. | ila KYC documents; additional requests can require a service-centre visit. |
| Self-employed ila applicant asked for further evidence | Commercial registration and three months of bank statements. | ila KYC documents |
| Khaleeji Salary Account applicant | Salary-transfer letter and salary certificate, plus identity documents appropriate to nationality and residence. | Khaleeji Salary Account |
ila’s KYC page lists a Bahraini CPR for Bahrain residents, or passport or GCC identity documentation, and says extra documents may be requested. Its account FAQ is more specific about the initial app documents. Follow the current app’s instructions and get clarification if the document options do not fit your status; do not read the broad KYC list as a promise that any passport is sufficient. ila KYC page and account FAQs, checked 6 October 2026.
If an identity or work-status record needs attention, use the Bahrain CPR guide and LMRA work-permit status guide. These checks help you prepare; they do not replace the bank’s document verification.
Build a document packet for your actual route
For BisB's GCC route, the public checklist calls for a valid GCC ID and passport, residence evidence such as a utility bill or rental agreement, and any additional documents requested. Confirm acceptable document dates and address formats before starting. BisB document checklist.
Keep a simple private checklist with four columns: document requested, name and validity checked, uploaded or shown to the bank, and any correction requested. This is a preparation method, not an additional bank requirement. Use clear complete scans in the format the bank asks for, keep the application reference, and correct mismatched details through the issuing authority or bank.
For a dependent, student or person without salaried employment, explain the source of the money you expect to receive and ask what evidence is acceptable. Do not invent an employer or submit a salary document that does not describe your circumstances.
4. Separate the opening deposit from ongoing fees

An opening deposit is money placed in the account. A minimum-balance charge is a fee triggered by the bank’s balance rule. An annual subscription is a separate cost. Compare all three before selecting an account.
| Product | Published charge or threshold | What to understand |
|---|---|---|
| BBK retail Current Account | BHD 5.500 if the weighted average monthly balance is below BHD 300. | The tariff uses a monthly average, not simply the balance on payday. BBK tariff |
| BBK retail Saving or Salary Transfer Account | BHD 1.100 if the weighted average monthly balance is below BHD 20. | This is a different product row with a different threshold. BBK tariff |
| NBB Express Saver | BHD 20 weighted average monthly balance; BHD 1.100 per month if the minimum is not maintained. | Subject to the tariff’s footnote 1 exemptions. NBB June 2026 tariff |
| Standard ila account | BHD account opening: free. Annual subscription: none. | Other services can still cost money. ila account tariff |
| ila Premium | BHD account opening: free. Annual subscription: BHD 55. | Do not confuse the optional premium product with the standard account. ila account tariff |
The BBK tariff is effective 7 September 2025; the ila tariff is effective 10 May 2026. Both include VAT where applicable. BBK lists exemptions from minimum-balance fees for specified groups, including students, pensioners and customers earning below BHD 250 monthly, with identification of the qualifying category required. Confirm any exemption with the bank rather than assuming it has been applied. BBK exemptions and ila tariff, checked 6 October 2026.
NBB’s June 2026 tariff includes VAT where applicable. Footnote 1 exempts orphans, widows, disabled persons, pensioners, individuals receiving social subsidies, students, and Bahraini and non-Bahraini customers with monthly salaries below BHD 250 from the marked charges, including the Express Saver minimum-balance fee. Customers must contact their branch with proof of their qualifying status. NBB tariff, footnote 1, checked 6 October 2026.
Read a monthly balance requirement correctly
The NBB Express Saver tariff says weighted average monthly balance. Paying BHD 20 into the account once is not the same as maintaining the stated monthly average. Ask how the bank treats a partial opening month and which balances enter the calculation. Keep its answer with the tariff rather than substituting a rule from a different account. NBB June 2026 tariff.
As a simple budgeting illustration, a BHD 1.100 charge applied in each of twelve months totals BHD 13.200. That is arithmetic, not a forecast that you will pay it: maintaining the required balance or qualifying for the documented exemption changes the outcome. An opening deposit remains your account balance, while a deducted fee is a cost.
Also compare foreign-card spending, international transfers, ATM use, replacement cards, printed statements and dormant-account charges. A low opening amount does not establish the lowest total cost for your usage.
5. Submit through the official app or branch
- Open the bank’s own product page. Follow its official app-store or branch link and check you have selected Bahrain.
- Choose the intended account. Read the account name, tariff, balance rule and optional subscription choices before agreeing.
- Complete the bank’s identity checks. Use your own valid documents and follow its instructions for any photograph, selfie or additional evidence.
- Review the application. Check personal details, contact information and the source of funds you have entered. Submit only through the official bank channel.
- Save the reference and next step. Keep the confirmation, any request for documents and the terms provided to you.
Get unclear service eligibility confirmed before relying on it
BisB's GCC promotional FAQ says customers can apply for financing or credit cards after opening. Its general terms list those applications among GCC customer exclusions. This is a service-availability conflict, so obtain a written answer for your exact product and status before selecting the account for borrowing. A successful deposit-account application does not resolve it. GCC promotional FAQ; General terms and GCC exclusions.
Digital opening can still require human review. Arab Bank explicitly reserves the ability to request additional documents and a branch visit. Khaleeji’s salary-account instructions require taking documents to a branch to activate the account. Arab Bank onboarding and Khaleeji opening instructions, checked 6 October 2026.
ila says accounts can often be opened within minutes but documents or missing information can delay the process. Treat that as the bank’s description, not a guaranteed approval deadline. This guide has not submitted an application or tested a private onboarding journey. ila processing FAQ, checked 6 October 2026.
After approval: confirm activation, IBAN and salary details

An application acknowledgement is not the same as a usable account. Check the bank’s status message and complete any remaining steps before directing a salary payment or a large transfer to it.
- Verify your name and the account currency in the bank’s app or documents.
- Get the IBAN from the bank and copy it carefully into your employer’s requested payroll form.
- Confirm whether your employer needs an IBAN certificate, salary-transfer letter or another bank document.
- Activate the debit card through the bank’s instructions and check payment limits and notification settings.
- Read the first statement and check that the agreed tariff or qualifying exemption was applied.
BBK explains that a Bahrain IBAN has 22 alphanumeric characters and can be found on bank statements or in online or mobile banking. An IBAN identifies an account; a valid-looking string alone does not prove who owns it. Obtain yours directly from your bank. BBK IBAN guidance, checked 6 October 2026.
If the bank asks for another document, request the exact missing item and whether it must be original, recent or certified. If a disclosed fee or service remains disputed, keep the supporting records and use the bank’s complaint process. The CBB consumer-information page explains its complaint role and links to the applicable procedure, checked 6 October 2026.
