Bahrain Dependent Visa Health Insurance: What to Check Before Applying

Check the certificate and coverage dates before you pay

By Gaurav Agarwal · Checked 26 September 2026

For a new LMRA residence application for your spouse or child, prepare a valid health insurance certificate covering the duration of the primary worker's residence permit. Check those dates with your employer's authorised applicant before buying a policy. LMRA's current document lists use the primary worker's permit as the reference, so a generic one-year or two-year quote may need checking against your application.

01Check the official requirement for your family member

LMRA lists a health insurance certificate among the required documents for both spouse residence permits and children's residence permits. Both pages display a last-update date of 10 September 2026 and say the certificate's validity must cover the primary worker's residence-permit duration.

This guide concerns those employer-linked LMRA applications. The children's service covers children up to age 24; its instructions direct applications for older dependants to NPRA. If you use another residence route, confirm its own checklist rather than applying these steps automatically.

The change was reported earlier this month. EY's 8 September alert gives 1 September 2026 as the effective date for new dependent applications. This is a September requirement, not a new announcement made today.

02Resolve the one-year versus two-year confusion before paying

Online summaries differ. Fragomen's 17 September alert describes cover matching the dependent's permit duration. Deloitte's 21 September note describes at least two years. LMRA's own current pages specify the primary worker's residence permit.

  1. Ask the person handling your application for the primary worker's permit dates and the intended dependent application details.
  2. Show the insurer those dates and ask for the proposed policy start and end dates in writing.
  3. If a renewal is pending, the worker's permit is close to expiry, or the dates do not line up, ask LMRA to confirm the required coverage period before purchasing.

For example, if a proposed policy expires in September 2027 while the primary worker's permit runs until March 2028, there is a date mismatch to resolve. This illustration is a document check, not confirmation that any particular policy will be accepted.

03Get a usable certificate and compare the full quote

Ask your employer whether your family already has health cover and whether the insurer can issue the required certificate. You may need documentation for existing cover rather than a second policy. Have the authorised applicant check it against the current application requirements.

When requesting a new quote, ask the insurer to confirm:

  • The covered dependant's name and identity details, with spelling matching the application documents.
  • The policy dates and the certificate it will provide for the LMRA application.
  • The total premium, any additional charges, and the terms for correcting or cancelling the policy if the application dates change.
  • Covered treatment, exclusions, hospital network, waiting periods and amounts you would pay when using the cover.

These are questions to ask before buying, not an official list of minimum policy benefits. A low advertised price alone does not establish suitable coverage or acceptance for your application. Get a quote for your own dependant and dates; an online comment about someone else's premium is not a guaranteed price.

04Send the documents to the authorised applicant

LMRA's services are submitted through the employer's authorised or responsible person. Use the relevant official checklist for the remaining documents, including passports and relationship evidence. The insurance certificate is one part of the application.

  1. Send a clear certificate copy to the person submitting through LMRA's Expat Management System.
  2. Ask them to check the dependant's details and coverage dates before submission.
  3. Keep the application reference and monitor any request for further documents.
  4. If the application is returned, obtain the exact reason before buying replacement cover. Ask whether a corrected certificate or revised dates would address the stated issue.

Use private employer and insurer channels for passports, policy documents and application references.

05Ask separately about renewals and unusual cases

The official pages checked here describe issuance. They do not establish a blanket answer for every renewal. EY's September alert describes new applications, while Fragomen says renewal guidance was not available at the time of its alert. Do not treat either statement as a permanent renewal exemption.

For a renewal, existing policy, pending worker renewal or a different residence category, ask the authorised applicant to verify the live requirements. LMRA's service pages list its contact centre at +973 1750 6055.

I am preparing a [new application/renewal] for my [spouse/child]. The primary worker's residence permit is valid from [date] to [date]. The proposed insurance covers [date] to [date]. Please confirm the coverage dates and certificate required for this application, and whether the existing policy can be used.

Once residence is approved, use the step-by-step guide to downloading the Bahrain residence permit to obtain the document.
